RAMADAN
The date of Ramadan - the holiest month of the Muslim calendar - varies slightly each year, as its start depends on the first sighting of the new moon, but it is always in the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, .
Ramadan officially starts today at dawn.
Listen out the next 30 days for radio stations, where the programme schedule may change due to the Ramadan, i.e. extended programing during night time.

From around 7st of September 2009,
Radio Kavkaz has a 24 hour, 7 days a week schedule according to my observation on 171 khz longwave. I think they doesn't using the name 'Radio Free Chechnia' anymore. My location doesn't make it possible to monitor Radio Kavkaz's mediumwave frequency of 657 kHz. My QTH is Magyarlak, western part of Hungary.

MW tx which formerly carried Radio Mayak broadcasts on 1521 kHz in Kazan, Russia, is silent since 1 Nov. I phoned the transmitting center, and they told me that it has been switched off for good.
252 kHz with Radio Rossii / Radio Tatarstana / Na Volne Tatarstana was not affected by this decision and continues operation in regular mode.

Here's my translation of the news that appeared in Russian Open_DX conference today:

The medium wave transmitter of
R.Mayak in Kazan on 1521 kHz has been turned off. I called radio/TV transmitting center and was told it's for good - that's VGTRK's decision.
Now we can enjoy China Radio International on AM, too :-(((

Here's the formal announcement in Russian:
http://www.mcrt.ru/index.php?nodeid=2&id=8926
Mayak's AM relay in Kazan was closed down on Nov.1. If I'm not mistaken it was a 20-kW transmitter.

/ CHECHNYA
I could still hear "program Kavkaz golos Rossii" April 19th 16:30 UTC. I couldn't understand Russian, the tone of announncer was very low, heavy and slow. Something was different as usual.
171kHz 16:30~17:30 program was going.

RUSSIA / CHECHNYA
Kai, it's heard loud and clear in Moscow throughout the whole broadcast day. The location of the Russian capital is such that you can quite easily listen to either Tbilisskaya or Kaliningrad here (Kaliningrad is weaker than Tbilisskaya, though).
But you are right, I don't see a link to a live streaming on http://www.chechnyafree.ru/ - only recorded reports and a link to Russia's news TV channel Vesti. Moreover, the old audio link http://radio.chechnyafree.ru:8000/listen.pls doesn't seem to work anymore. But news are still updated.
So much for Bystritskiy's promise of a bright Internet future for VoR's services!
VoR's Programma Kavzaz is now dealing with wider Russia's Caucasus plus Georgia proper. Well, it's coming from Tbilisskaya, after all :) I wonder if Kavkaz is going to launch a new website and if it still has Chechen service.

RUSSIA / CHECHNYA
Chechnya Svobodnaya / Program Kavkas closed down? All references to radio transmissions have been removed from the http://www.chechnyafree.ru website.
This must have been done not earlier than on Friday, since they are still in the Google cache from April 17.
Is somebody able to check out 171 from Tbilisskaya? Here in Germany the frequency is blocked by Bolshakovo (Radio Rossii for the Baltics and/or Belarus), so it is not possible to find out from here.
Kai Ludwig via dxld yg (19/4-2009)
The state of emergency in Chechnya was lifted a few days ago - this is probably connected to that event.

RUSSIA / GERMANY
On Wednesday or Thursday (April 1/2)
693 (Zehlendorf) has been switched to another feed with VoR German and Mezhdunarodnoye Russkoye Radio, and today I had an opportunity to verify that it now indeed carries Polish between 1700-1800, // 1143 from Bolshakovo. However, 1323 (Wachenbrunn) is still "all English, all the time", contrary to all published schedules I have seen so far.

RUSSIA
The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium has learned that Russia’s General Radio Frequency Centre has decided to introduce DRM in Russia in the medium and shortwave bands. The Russian General Radio Frequency Centre, the organisation that coordinates national spectrum management issues, took the  decision on 20 January 2009 following a series of tests on the future use of transmission networks with digital technology.
The Russian text of the decision is available on the website of the Ministry of Communications and Information of the Russian Federation.

The Russian section of the VoR Caucasus Programme website (chechnyafree.ru) now states their mediumwave frequency is 657 kHz (the English section still refers to the old frequency of 594 kHz), which tallies with Herman Boel's excellent MW Guide (www.emwg.info).
657 kHz was formerly used for the Groznyy relay of Radio Russia and local programming from GTRK "Vaynakh".
Later: Actually, now that I've looked again at the entry in Herman's MW Guide, it lists the times for Radio Free Chechnya on that frequency as 1500-1600 & 1800-1900, so possibly it's still used for local (GTRK "Vaynakh") programming and RR relays outside those times.
657 kHz is a transmitter in a train:
http://chechnia.rtrn.ru/data/img_complexmetel_1.jpg
Dave Kernick, dxld yg (7/3-2009)
It's a system called Metel, capable of running 100 kW but used at 50 kW. It went on air in Chechnya in April 2000 after the Grosny mediumwave station has been destroyed. This mobile transmitter will be replaced by a new mediumwave site with two Transradio TRAM 50 transmitters for 657 and 1287 kHz, respectively, scheduled to be completed in June.
594 kHz is Vladikavkas, running 25 kW with a Tesla SRV 20 transmitter, installed in 1974. Probably it now carries Vesti FM. http://stredni.vlny.sweb.cz/Tesla/SRV_20_cz.html

RUSSIA
An addition to a recent posting about Russia on AM.
I was in Novosibirsk, Siberia, 28 July-2 August, 2008. Only three active AM-stations noted:
Radio Rossii 171, Radio Slovo 270 and Radio Mayak 576 kHz. The receiver used was Sangean ATS-909.
Signal strenghts of local AM-stations were not very good, so I suppose these are kept on the air with reduced power for mostly old people who are used to tune their AM-radios into a certain wave-lenght or "volna".
I also noted that regional breaks (local news & advertisements) were audible on FM only while AM frequencies of Radio Rossii and Mayak relayed Moscow at the same time.
It seems that there is going on a huge shift from AM to FM in Russia. Private stations have already moved to FM (very few exceptions) and now the giant state-owned VGTRK-channels like Radio Rossii and Mayak are also moving to FM (including OIRT-FM).

I decided to revive the MW bandscan project on my website. The frequency table, that lists stations heard more or less regularly in my location, has been put to:
http://dxsignal.ru/read/mw_eng.htm (English version)
http://dxsignal.ru/read/mw_rus.htm (Russian version)
Certainly, it is far from complete. Most frequencies were only explored in the daytime. I will update the table from time to time.
