Grupo Radio Centro Sports “Lone Star Sports 920KQBU El Paso TX has ceased operations.

KQBU has carried CBS Sports Radio programming and Houston Texans football since launching its Sports brand in September 2018. In its filing with the FCC, Grupo Radio Centro notes that operations of the station is not currently possible as it has lost the station’s tower site and is making plans to relocate. KQBU had been operating at just 150 watts since May under an STA that stated they were working on rebuilding the tower.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is without electricity following Hurricane Fiona. 3million people in darkness unless they have personal power generators.

Most MW stations that I could find streaming online still seem to be doing so, but that doesn’t mean that their MW transmitters are still on air, or that they won’t run out of diesel fuel for generators.

(Still apparently streaming online: WMDD 1480; Notiuno 630; WSRN 1320; WPAB 550; WKVM 810; Victoria 840; WPRA 990; WBMJ 1190; could not connect to WRSS 1410; WOLA 1380)

FCC update on Puerto Rico dated 18/9 at 12pm EDT.
FCC says 24% of entire cellular network is down and another 31% is holding on due to standby power.
However only reports two FM stations off air. AM & TV not reporting outages.

580 WKAQ San Juan, Puerto Rico still on air despite Hurricane Fiona knocking out a lot of the power grid and causing flooding.
Power may have been dialled down as WDBO FL is competing as noted in attached audio. Usually WKAQ “owns it” on 580 here.
19 SEP at 0500 UTC.

WRJR 670, Claremont, VA is no longer Spanish language religious. It’s now part of a consortium of stations that carry a progressive/alternative/eclectic rock format fed from Stu-Comm’s independent, non-profit WNRN out of Charlottesville. (reported yesterday 17/9)

WRJR is licenced with 20kW days and 3 W at night. For some reason this has been omitted from previous lists of US “daytimers” that European DXers might hear just before the transmitter reduces power..

In September it should reduce power at 1815EST = 2315UTC and reception should improve towards the end of the month. At the end of Sept actual sunset will be 1754EST so the transmitter will be running full power for about 20 minutes after sunset.

There is one catch however, the station runs a directional antenna during the day with a deep null pointing directly at the BDMR in Clashmore! (shown by the trace in the image below). Best reception should be in South Africa. ( the null is a legacy of the years before 2003 when CKXB operated on 670kHz from Musgravestown in Newfoundland.)

Hurricane Fiona:
Entire island of PR reported blacked out on news circa 19 UT Sept 18. Look for hams and MW stations on aux power.
