Russia

LPAM on medium wave.
Russia has just granted a collective radio licence to broadcast on 1485 kHz from the Vologda region, 500km north of Moscow. The radio is to be called ‘радиостанция Зеленый глаз’ (Green Eye Radio Station). The transmitting power is said to be just 100 watts and the omnidirectional antenna is 28 metres high.
A little ‘medium wave liberation’, just like the countries around us. Would we have a worse system in France and Belgium?
This station is unlikely to be received outside Russia, although Dutch stations of the same power have already been received in Russia 3000 km away.
The name Oeil Vert comes from the magic radio tubes that equipped the old receivers as tuning indicators.
Another experiment granted in March this year: the RU3C collective radio station at Moscow’s Technical University of Communications and Informatics, to broadcast on 25 900 KHz with 1 kW.

Since 2014, Russia had deserted medium wave and short wave, there were very few exceptions:
684 kHz: Radio Radonej Orthodox Church in Olgino (St Petersburg) 10 kW
765 kHz: Radio East Russia, a synchronised network on the territory of Khabarov) from 5 to 20 kW
1053 kHz: Radio Maria Catholic Church in Olgino (St Petersburg) (stopped for financial reasons) 10kW
1584 kHz: Radio Vague Pure in Belorechensk (Krasnodar region) which broadcasts with 300 W
In addition, there are the old Voice of Russia transmitters, which the government is bringing back into service and which are currently being tested in Bolshokovo (Kaliningrad) and Krasnodar.
As a reminder, a licence was granted in Moscow in 2009 for a radio station of the same name, but the two initiatives are not linked. The previous Moscow station had obtained licences to broadcast experimental programmes on 1602 kHz, 102.7 MHz and three short-wave frequencies 5955, 5995 and 6135 kHz. This was original because, given the congestion on short-wave frequencies, the radio was obliged to stop broadcasting at the start of each hour for five minutes and switch to ‘reception’ to analyse the interference situation and select the best operating frequency from the three provided.

Japan

Public broadcaster NHK on mediumwave.
For the past week or so I’ve been using webSDRs to peruse Japanese public broadcaster NHK outlets on mediumwave and have a few observations to make.

NHK Radio 1 is on air round the clock on many MW frequencies, giving local identifications a few seconds preceding the following UTC times according to my own observations and/or the 2022 edition of WRTH (the most recent edition to have this information): 0300, 1000 (confirmed), 2000 (confirmed).

NHK Radio 2 is on air from 2053UT daily to 1440UT Monday-Saturday, 1500UT on Sunday, starting with an interval signal played on a celesta followed by a local ID just before the hour. Note that these times are different to those given in MW List and some other sources. If timings confirmation is required it can be found in the programme guides on the NHK website – nhk.or.jp. There’s another local ID at closedown, followed by the national anthem “Kimagayo” then a very unusual feature (if not unique) – another interval signal played on celesta, but a different melody to the one played at sign-on! Local IDs other than those given at sign-on and sign-off are at the following UTC times, again according to WRTH 2022 edition and/or own observations: 0030, 0410 Sat-Sun, 0415 Mon-Fri, 0720 (latter confirmed).

Off-air recordings of many of these regional NHK mediumwave outlets will be appearing on the Interval Signals Online website in the coming days – intervalsignals.net

Egypt

Tonight for first time I observe an Arabic station on 761.23kHz. First noted at 2255utc with time pips at 2300utc.
Not evident previous nights. Identity?
Unfortunately rather a lot of static tonight.

Due to maintenance work on the antenna mast, broadcasting will cease on 30.9.2024 between 0830 and 1600 local time. This affects VHF, DAB+ and DVB-T in addition to medium wave (Radio Capodistria Beli Križ 1170 kHz).

United States

For some time now I’ve suspected that WILE, 1270, Cambridge, OH, had gone silent. Can now confirm from a visit to the area that they were off all last week. This appears to be permanent. Their FM and other FMs in the group continue operating.
Also noted WTNS, 1560, Coshocton, OH, off Thursday, 9/19, but on Sunday, 9/22.

Sabras Radio.
Went off air at 15:30pm on 1260 medium wave in Leicester and still off air now. BBC Asian Network on 837 medium wave looks like on reduced power, the signal is very poor in Birmingham but transmitter in Leicester. BBC Asian Network has a transmitter in Birmingham on 1458 medium wave, is working fine.

This radio station was off air between 15:30pm to 23:30pm was blamed on bad weather.
1260 medium wave is now running fine in Leicester.
