KN(I)TS-1680 in Seattle is now Radio Punjabi // KKDZ-1250KNTS had been conservative talk //KKOL-1300.  The change seemed to take place July 23, or possibly July 22.
The audio on 1250 is over a minute behind 1680.  As of today, the station is running IDS for KKDZ and KNTS at the ToH, after a couple days with IDs only for KKDZ .
KKDZ’s 1250 signal has been quite weak in Seattle since it moved to its current site east of Auburn WA about a year ago.  It is often buried under KWSU and KNEU, so the simulcast makes sense in order to have any Seattle listeners.

At 88, “A Voz do Brasil” draws new listeners, keeps loyal audience.
The radio broadcast promotes citizenship, university professor says.

Radio broadcast A Voz do Brasil (“The Voice of Brazil”) is celebrating its 88th anniversary. The program is the oldest still on air in the Southern Hemisphere, according to the Guinness Book of Records.
The program was created on July 22, 1935, by then-President Getulio Vargas, and its transmission became mandatory for all stations in 1938, during the Estado Novo regime. In 2015, A Voz do Brasil was allowed to be aired from 7pm to 11pm, from Monday to Friday.
In the first decades of its existence, when radio was the main means of communication in Brazil, the program, then called Hora do Brasil (“Brazil Hour,” or “Brazil Time”), was the main source of information
about the government for a large number of people, especially in rural areas. In 1962, the Legislative Branch took up a section of the program, which today also presents reports from the Judiciary branch
and the Federal Court of Accounts.
Despite the advance of television and the internet, A Voz do Brasil retains its loyal audience, which includes 77-year-old retiree Raimundo Nonato de Oliveira. He says he learned about the Vietnam War, World War II, and the first man on the moon through the show.
“We learn about things like education, health care, and transportation. It’s a general overview of the country. Even today, it’s A Voz do Brazil that keeps folks in the woods, in the countryside, and in the rubber plantations informed,” he said. Nonato lives in the northern state of Acre, in the Brazilian Amazon.
The program also brings news to younger generations. “A Voz do Brazil is part of my life,” said 29-year-old journalist and quilombola Janaina Neri, who lives in the state of Bahia, in the Northeast. She said her community did not have electricity until she was 18, so the broadcast has always been one of the chief sources of information in the quilombo.
The last survey on the program’s audience, published in 2015, reports that 32 percent of Brazilians listened to A Voz do Brasil at least once a week. The study was conducted by Ibope Inteligencia, at the request of the president’s office.
Communication Professor at the University of Brasilia (UnB) Fernando Oliveira Paulino pointed out that A Voz do Brasil promotes citizenship as it brings the federal capital closer to the most remote areas.
“The program has always been essential in reporting the inner activities of the Executive, Judiciary, and Legislative branches. It’s still alive today even after the latest technological changes because it lets the people know exactly how our rulers are taking action,” he noted.

Transparency
A Voz do Brasil is a necessity because it brings transparency to acts of government, says EBC President Helio Doyle, further describing the program as “heritage of Brazilian radio.” EBC has 25 minutes allocated to the Executive in the transmission.
“It’s one of the government’s tools for keeping a direct contact with the people. It’s come under criticism for some time, right? It was as if the ruler, whoever they are, should not address people directly; as if there had to be a middleman,” he argued, adding that the government needs a direct communication channel with citizens.

Seattle change? 1680kHz.
Report noticed today.
KNTS 1680 is now simulcasting Radio Punjab, also heard on KKDZ 1250, after months of simulcasting KKOL. This seems to have happened within the last week, I think, as 1680 was still simulcasting KKOL when I last remember checking this frequency. I actually didn’t notice it until an AM DX’er in Michigan actually alerted me and others on a Facebook page.  I’ve just confirmed via local SDR

RTE mast to be demolished.
An iconic landmark in Offaly was toppled today and the video above captures the dramatic moment it was brought crashing to the ground. Our video shows the demolition from three different perspectives. Watch to the end to see the last pieces come crashing to earth.

The 296 metre tall red and white RTE radio mast in Ballycommon has been in place since 1973 and is visible from many miles around. The mast ceased operation in March 2008 and has been out of use ever since. Today it was expertly taken to the ground in a controlled explosion at around 12.15pm. As the video shows, it collapsed almost directly down on itself as the wires that have held it so securely in place were removed. It is planned to replace the mast with a new 48-metre high latticework communications tower on the site with new fencing.

All India Radio merges Kozhikode AM, FM stations – The Hindu

Listeners in Kozhikode are going to miss some of their regular programmes on the All India Radio’s Amplitude Modulated (AM) transmission station available at the medium wave frequency of 684 kHz.
This follows the Prasar Bharati’s decision to merge the existing AM station and its Frequency Modulated (FM) service from the city, titled ‘Real FM’, available at 103.6 MHz, from Sunday.

Sources told The Hindu that this would impact the regional services being aired from Kozhikode. The AM station used to broadcast programmes for sectors such as education and agriculture, reflecting the social commitment of the public service broadcaster. The merger may put an end to such shows or reduce their number as the FM station is generally seen as an infotainment platform. A large number of artistes who regularly present programmes may also be rendered jobless. Another affected section will be the hundreds of casual staff, including announcers and news readers, who work on contract basis with the station. Their number will be cut down. Most of the other cities in the country, such as Bengaluru and Chennai, have two AIR FM stations apart from the MW station. There, the MW channel was merged with one of the FM channels and the other FM station was retained. In Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, there is only one FM station each. AM stations use analogue technology, which is now seen as an outdated one with the advent of digital technology. It is difficult to replace some of the old components of the medium wave transmitter. In view of this, the authorities had in 2020 decided to close down the Kozhikode AM station, but the plan was dropped following widespread criticism. Last year, the Prasar Bharati had also tried to convert the FM station as a centre to relay their programmes in Hindi while stopping many Malayalam programmes. This was revoked after MPs from the State raised the issue in Parliament. Now, the move is to slowly phase out the AM station. A similar plan has already been implemented with the Ananthapuri FM Station in Thiruvananthapuram shutting down services. Meanwhile, there is a demand to start a new FM station in Kozhikode as well.

“iHeart Is Still Focused on AM as a Medium”

At a time where the viability of the U.S. AM broadcast band has come under the microscope, what’s the prevailing attitude of iHeartMedia and the 250 AM properties it owns and operates? Continue to invest, says Jeff Littlejohn.

Pirate radio in Poland explored.
In this episode of The Debrief, we meet radio historian Dr Urszula Doliwa from the University of Warmia and Mazury.

The history of pirate radio in Poland is slightly different to the stories many know about the famous pirate stations of the 1960s and 70s such as Radio Caroline. Here, pirate radio was more a fight for free speech than looking for the latest music trends…
