No medium wave radio on electric cars?
The abandonment of thermic engines is a mandatory goal to reduce CO2 emissions. The automotive industry is getting ready and among the aspects that are being discussed, there is also radio listening. On electric cars, HF interference is generated primarily by the frequency converter, a device that controls the amount of power delivered by the electric motor by turning the voltage on and off thousands of times per second. This generates signals that fall in the medium wave broadcast band: electrical noises (such as distortion and crackling) similar to those emitted by smartphones, TVs, computers, vacuum cleaners and hair dryers. In addition, static electricity, which creates crackles, increases with the power of the motors. So much so that some manufacturers, such as BMWMiniTesla and Volkswagen have eliminated the AM band on their current cars. Others, like General Motors, are studying the problem, but the solution isn’t around the corner. Xperi Corporation, a leading digital radio company, whose HD Radio standard (a patent it owns) is used both in the FM and AM band, claims that its transmission system is not afraid of interference. And it presented test results at NAB Broadcast Engineering and Information Technology, the annual conference of American broadcasters. According to Pooja Nair, an engineer at Xperi Corporation, a fully digital AM signal resists interference much better than an analogue one.

CJSN 1490 SHAUNAVON
Golden West’s CJSN 1490 is a 1,000 watt station based out of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. I could be wrong, but it appears from their website that there is no longer any local programming and the station is now a 100% simulcast of CKSW 570 in Swift Current. The studios, along with a sales office for CIMG 94.1 (THE EAGLE) are located at 407 Centre Street in Shaunavon. Shaunavon is located 52 miles (84 km’s) southwest of Swift Current.

Sweden

Next Friday, the Swedish VLF transmitter SAQ at Grimeton [17,2 kHz] will send a Christmas message. You will be able to hear the mechanical 200 kW transmitter starting up at 07:30 UTC, and sending a CW message at 19:00 UTC on Christmas Eve. Also on air will be SK6SAQ on 3535kHz, 7035kHz and 14035 kHz CW, and on 3755 kHz and 7140 kHz SSB. Reception of the VLF signal requires either an up-converter for an HF receiver, or a simple longwire into the microphone socket of a pc, laptop or phone. The signal can then be heard and seen with the help of the very simple to use software made available by the Grimeton Crew.

Radio Caroline confirms power increase on 648 AM medium wave.

Radio Caroline is now transmitting 4kw of power following approval from Ofcom to increase its 1kw output.

The stronger signal now covers East Anglia, East Midlands, Kent, Sussex and beyond, as well as once again covering The Netherlands and Belgium, and into France and Germany.

Ofcom agreed to the increase earlier this year and the power was boosted last week.

A powerful Harris transmitter, capable of providing 25kw of power, was imported from Holland and installed at the Orfordness Transmitting Site in Suffolk, England where Radio Caroline sends its 648 AM signal from a redundant but complete BBC World Service facility now owned by Cobra Mist Ltd, who offered Radio Caroline use of the facility.

“It may seem crazy to turn the clock back when other radio stations and the BBC are winding down AM – and only Radio Caroline would do this – but there is method in our madness, in that AM radio works as well as it ever did with durability and long range.” said Radio Caroline station manager Peter Moore.

“Most cars have an AM radio and for sure every home has one that just needs to be taken down off the shelf. For years the industry and government have been persuading listeners to put perfectly good radios to one side and buy a new set that works in a different way – but maybe not as well. If your usual station has deserted you, listeners can return to Caroline.”

Italy

Here’s the new list of Italian LPAM transmitters on medium waves. For more information, I invite you to check out the new website of our friends from OMitaliane on http://omitaliane.it/medium-wave-radio-list/
As the Emanuele Scatarzi is precise, this list exclusively covers the signals that are actually active and allowed on the Italian territory.

KZMP 1540 Dallas SILENT.
The transmitter site has been sold and towers dismantled.   I’m guessing that IF KZMP comes back at all, it’ll be greatly reduced in signal coverage as it would cost $1 mil plus to rebuild and all 1540 did was simulcast an FM in recent years.
Famed engineering firm Hatfield & Dawson from Seattle was just there 2 1/2 years ago or so to tune up the array which wasn’t cheap work to have done.
