Goodbye BBC Radio 4 on Long Wave (198 kHz) !

On the occasion of the closure of longwave broadcasting by BBC Radio 4 at 198 kHz, an IQ-wideband recording from 26/27-06-2026 is available under this link https://www.cohiradia.org/de/archiv/detail/?id=166 on the COHIRADIA page. The file contains the last 150 minutes, including the anthem closing the program at 02:00 UTC.

The recording was made by Walter Barteczek with a STEMLAB125-14 SDR in Neunkirchen-Seelscheid (Germany). It contains the complete LW band between 95 and 345kHz from 21:20 – 00:55 UTC. The files can be downloaded in standard IQ-wav-format, either for digital playback with major SDR-software (HDSDR, SDRUno, SDR#, …) or for analogue playback on historical radio receivers when using the equipment described in COHIRADIA https://www.cohiradia.org/de/.

There will be a second and probably a third recording available by the end of the week, made at different locations. Interested radio amateurs and collectors are cordially invited to visit the growing archive of COHIRADIA with many freely available records of complete AM-bands. Tuning through some of them allows to witness also the last hours of other traditional stations like RTL and Kalundborg on LW as well as Absolute Radio and RAI Radio1 on MW.

Remark: The files, though having the extension ‘wav’, are no audio files and cannot be played back with standard audio players. Use HDSDR, SDRUno, SDR# or similar tools.

BBC Radio 4 Long Wave has been switched off, prompting calls to protect the Wychbold transmitter masts. The two 700ft structures near Droitwich carried the BBC’s long wave signal across the UK for decades and are visible from the M5.
As expected, the 198 LW service was being turned off this weekend, and it ended programming after the shipping forecast and the national anthem last night.
Local history experts and the Twentieth Century Society have begun a campaign for the masts to be listed, citing their historic, engineering and technological significance.
The site began broadcasting in September 1934 after Droitwich was chosen for its central location.
The BBC said the closure followed the ageing of the long wave equipment and the move of most listening to
FM, DAB and online platforms. The site is owned by Arqiva.

ZNS1 burns
Wow, that really bites!  And, during hurricane season.  The cost to get 1540 back on the air estimated to be $1.2 to $2 million “dollars.”  Not sure what that comes to in US dollars but it will be very expensive.  810 ZNS2 will have to become the #1 MW station in the Bahamas but their coverage area is significantly smaller than 1540.

With WIOD’s upgrade (610 kHz Maima FL / Ed) over 3 years ago, 50k day & 20k night, all sent to the east, already pretty much the “de facto” go-to in hurricane season, Bahamians with decent radios will likely be tuning in.
810 is important too, of course—but with WIOD heard daytime as far as Bermuda….wellllll…!
