A SECOND CME IS APPROACHING: Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are likely on July 21st (1600 UT) when a CME is expected to hit Earth’s magnetic field. This would be the second day in a row a CME has struck. Yesterday’s impact was weak and did not spark a geomagnetic storm, but it might have softened up our magnetosphere for a more effective strike today.

Open Day on the ‘Jenni Baynton‘ on Sunday 30 July.

Radio lightship in Harlingen open to the public
The work to prepare our striking red ship in the harbor of Harlingen for opening to the public has reached the stage where the hospitality team lays out the gangway and opens the doors. We start modestly with two Sunday afternoons in July. The kick-off is this Sunday, July 16. From 13:00 people can register for a guided tour. The studios will be in operation and the large multifunctional space in the belly of the ship can be viewed.
The ship dates from 1949 and has had an eventful life as a lightship, disco and radio ship. Since 2005, our volunteers have been working hard in Harlingen to restore, maintain and use the ship for events such as the recent RadioDay. We are already thinking about the program for next year. In 2024 it will be 50 years since the Dutch radio ships of Radio Veronica and Radio North Sea International were banned and disappeared. The Radio Lightship Jenni Baynton is the last working radioship in the Netherlands and that status naturally calls for an appropriate deployment in that jubilee year.
However, the opening will first take place in July 2023. The kick-off is on Sunday 16 July from 13:00 to 16:30 and for those who have to miss it, there is already a second chance on Sunday 30 July .

The mast for RTE’s medium wave transmitter in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, which was used to broadcast RTE Radio 1 on 567 kHz from 1975 to 2008, is scheduled to be demolished on the 25th of this month, one week from today. (News article here: https://www.leinsterexpress.ie/news/home/1251309/midlands-rte-tower-set-to-be-toppled.html)
Also there are unconfirmed reports of activity at the former 252 kHz longwave transmitter in Summerhill, Co. Meath – specifically aircraft warning lights having been removed in recent days. So that mast too could be coming down in the near future.

(CRTC) Reduction in night power approved for CJGX 940 Yorkton.
Harvard Media got the go ahead today to decrease the night power at CJGX 940 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan from 10,000 to 690 watts. Day power will remain 50,000 watts. The applicant states that the towers that were being used for nighttime operation had reached their useful lifespan and have been removed due to safety concerns. It is not desirable to rebuild the nighttime towers due to the considerable cost. The daytime tower remains intact and will continue to operate at 50 kW daytime and proposed to operate at 0.69 kW nighttime with a non-directional antenna system.

Last week, Pakistan’s Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb inaugurated 12 new studios which were set up on modern lines at Radio Pakistan under a reform agenda by the incumbent government.
The minister said that the government had rolled out a reform programme to upgrade and digitize Radio Pakistan on war footing. A comprehensive business plan had also been worked out to transform Radio Pakistan into a financially viable organization.
The studios she inaugurated were meant for round the clock sports transmission of Radio Pakistan FM at 94 frequency, broadcast of programmes in 11 regional languages, dedicated platform for discussing environmental challenges and highlight the country’s biodiversity, wildlife, water management, forest conservation and management. A world service was also launched to provide all sort of news, culture and heritage related content to the overseas Pakistanis.
Marriyum said the government had approved a digital DRM transmitter project worth Rs 4 billion in the current year’s Public Sector Development Programme.
The project would be launched soon in Rawat, she said, adding that Radio Pakistan’s Digital Migration would take the state broadcaster’s transmissions in clear sound not only across the length and breadth of the country but also beyond its borders.
This follows the June official announcement that the Federal Ministry for Planning Development and Special Initiatives had approved the upgrade of the HPT Rawat transmitting station with the acquisition of a 1000 KW DRM enabled medium wave transmitter.
This is part of phase 1 of a three-phase DRM digitisation plan of the public Pakistani broadcaster; in effect, this signifies that Pakistan has embraced the DRM standard in all bands for the whole country.
