Some Chinese DXer informed, in mid December, DRM test transmission with non stop Chinese music has been noted throughout the day on 1557kHz. The signal is over Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, displaying “Drm(GD_ZS)”. “GD” means Guandong, “ZS” means Zhongshan.
According to the other information, DRM broadcast is planned also in Guangzhou and Huizhou, Guandong Province, on the same frequency and format.
1557kHz is used by Radio Taiwan International (RTI) for Chinese service to Chinese mainland in the night (over Kouhu transmitter site, 300kW, at 0900-1700UT except 1100-12:00 KBS relay). China has set up many MW stations on 1557kHz to jam RTI. So this “DRM test” is actually a new jamming to RTI with DRM technology.
It is said the DRM coding software and modulator was developed by Communication University of China in Beijing. The transmitter is “GZ-G10K”, 10kW MW DRM transmitter , manufactured by Harbin Broadcasting Equipment Co. Ltd.
In addition, some MW transmitters in Yunnan, Liaoning, Jiangsu and other provinces have also carried out DRM test broadcasting, but the specific test information is not announced. Some informed Yunnan uses name “YUNNAN Broadcast”, xHE-AAC code, ID: 9FFF05.

The DX-test from WZON on 620 kHz this morning was heard by several listeners mostly not to far from the transmitter site.

“Got the start at 0103  CW ID and something else, maybe “DE WZON”, then a rising tone, then a bunch of DTMF, more CW and then … into PacMan Fever!   A song I had not heard, perhaps on purpose, for nearly 45 years.
All this under WVMT still dominating.  I’m going to go out on a limb and say that WZON is not on Night Power.  And thank them for that!
Announcer just mentioned that they were on Day power.”

Winter solstice bandscan 2024

I woke up and stumbled outside at 0020Z on the 22th, Panasonic transistor radio in hand. It was cloudy and chilly in the (thankfully low) wind.
Here, the LW band is down to France, the UK and Poland, all of which were listenable.
Signals were weak on the MW band with only the Gang of Brits (FiveLive, TalkSport, R. Scotland and R. Wales) being listenable.
So, it was one of these times I’d wish I sat in a comfy&cozy farmhouse with a good outdoor aerial plugged to a warm tabletop receiver.

WI2XLQ: Brian Justin’s annual longwave broadcast starting Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve:

What has now become an annual LF listening event, WI2XLQ (an FCC Experimental Callsign) will once again be QRV for a recreation of the alleged first voice transmission made by Reginald Fessenden in 1909. Transmission on 486kHz in full carrier AM will start at 22:00z on Dec 24th and run for 24hrs. In keeping with tradition, a repeat transmission will take place on Dec 31st at 22:00z and run for 24hrs. After months of  prolonged silence, the familiar voice of the *National Radio of Laos on 567 kHz from Vientiane has finally returned to the airwaves. Last evening, December 18, 2024, the station was heard broadcasting in Lao from around 12:30 PM local time until its sign-off at 13:00 UTC (8:00 PM Vientiane time). Just before going off the air, the station ID was announced twice, with the words sounding like: “Thini… Nee mai n Vee-ta-nyoo Ka-chai-siang Heng Sat Lao.”
I tuned in again this evening, 19 Dec. and found the signals steady and the broadcast as captivating as ever. The nostalgic tone of the station made it a moment to savor—like reconnecting with an old friend whose voice stirs long-buried memories !
