AM update from Middle east.
Today morning I have been heard that BBC has back in two MW frequencies from Cyprus, on 639 and 720 kHz. The reception was good and clear. It was only a test transmission with a music and periodical announcement of test transmission in English language.

Monitoring observations of Akashvani 12 May 2023 (VU2JOS)
Most of the stations of Prasar Bharati has now changed announcements from All India Radio to Akshwani with effect from 3 May 2023. However the following stations of Akshvani were noted with station identification as All India Radio during the sign on announcement today 12 May 2023!

1. Jowai, Meghalaya
2. Mokokchung , Nagaland
3. The stations in Tamilnadu (ie Chennai etc.) & Pudicherry are still announcing as All India Radio. Several political parties there have protested against the change.
4. For External Service, some language services are yet to change the identification announcements to Akashvani.

Hungary

(Google translated)
Hungarian radio can be heard well in Salzburg in the early evening with the Slovak program Nemzetisegi Adasok on three frequencies via five medium wave transmitters:

873 Nemzetisegi Adasok, Pecs
873 Nemzetisegi Adasok, Lakihegy
1188 Nemzetisegi Adasok, Szolnok
1188 Nemzetisegi Adasok, Marcali
1350 Nemzetisegi Adasok, Gyoer

The transmitters are very well synchronised, there is absolutely no echo to be heard on either of the dual frequencies.

At midnight the election campaign starts, so there are some changes in the local/regional programming of RNE1/5.
To begin with, tonight, at 0015 (or 0020) peninsular hours, there will be a regional disconnection for a special on the start of the campaign/poster posting.

The rest of the campaign days (until May 26, Friday) the time slot from 1:10 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. will undergo changes, especially in the second week (from 22 to 26 March (?/Ed)). Depending on the regions, and the type of elections to be held (not everywhere they are autonomous and municipal), the variations they will be bigger or smaller, but from 13’10 to 13’26’30” you can find local programming or regional, both in R1 and in R5TN. At 1:26 pm 3 minutes of electoral propaganda enter local. At 1:30 p.m., regional news as always, and the local one at 1:55 p.m. can be deleted for some days (for more regional time). There will be a special on Election Day, but it is not finalized yet.

AM Radio in Cars

Petition to save AM Radio.
I found a petition to save AM Radio: https://www.change.org/p/save-am-radio-a-part-of-the-emergency-alert-system

It’s only for the USA, but it can also benefit us in Europe, because if Tesla (or any other car manufacturer) for instance is forced to incorporate AM Radio in its US vehicles, then vehicles for Europe will probably also have a way to add this quickly, because they always want to save cost, and not make to much differences between different models of cars

So I encourage everyone to sign this, because you know how it is, if analog (AM/FM) radio is not easily available to people, that don’t know it has benefits yet, then there will be even less listeners, which will prompt even more stations to go off the air, because of no listeners and the cycle will repeat until there is nothing left…

BAS Broadcasting will soon sign-off Oldies 1300 WMVO Mount Vernon OH, but continue its programming on 93.7 WQIO-HD2 and 100.9 W265DJ Mount Vernon.

WMVO is licensed to operate with 410 watts day and 51 watts night, but has been operating with just 25 watts the past two years. BAS Broadcasting Owner/CEO Tom Klein wrote, “We spent tens of thousands of dollars consulting with multiple engineering firms conducting field work and extended research. We received multiple solutions costing hundreds of thousands of dollars to correct. Even after making the investment these firms could not guarantee 1300 AM WMVO would be back on the air at full power and within FCC rules and regulations.”

The station has been heard on the 100.9 translator since 2017 and will continue to after the AM signs-off. Klein notes, “Over the next several months we will be featuring sixty-second features on WMVO that will help listeners understand more about HD & our HD2 signal at 100.9 FM. We believe with all our hearts that this was fully thought out, weighing all our options, and ultimately knowing and understanding that this is the best for the community, best for WMVO and its employees.”

Space Weather

The Arctic Circle is in the grip of a radio blackout due to a polar cap absorption event occurring, all thanks to the sun’s activity.

This has led to radio frequencies below 15 MHz being nearly completely blacked out and most frequencies below 35 MHz being at least a little bit degraded, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

This polar cap absorption (PCA) event is occurring as a result of a coronal mass ejection that occurred on May 7 that is now colliding with our planet.

iFiber Communications is selling News/Talk “iFiberOne NewsRadio1030 KMAS/103.3 K277CZ Shelton WA to John & Rebecca Hansen’s Fjord Holdings LLC and Jeff Slakey’s The Anecdotalist LLC for $152,940.

The Hansens, who also own local magazine Tracing The Fjord, and Slakey will each own 50% of the station. The deal marks a return to KMAS for Slakey who started with the station as a part-time host in 2005 and rose to morning host in 2008 and later General Manager prior to his exit last May to join Tracing The Fjord as a reporter and media coordinator.

In a Facebook post announcing the sale, it is noted that KMAS will return to a Full Service Classic Hits format in the coming weeks.

Local cable operator iFiber Communications had merged with KMAS owner Olympic Broadcasting in 2016 with the station rebranding at that time to “iFiberOne NewsRadio“. KMAS serves the southern Puget Sound and southeast Olympic Peninsula.
