The licence for Smooth Radio Essex on 1359 and 1431 runs out at the end of the year. 1359 may be closing on June 30th as well, no announcement during the break for news, adverts, change of programme just before 1200 UTC today though.
Crowdfunder Campaign to save our historic former Grimsby side trawler and ‘pirate’ radio ship Ross Revenge On Radio Caroline‘s 59th birthday at Easter we launched a Crowdfunder Campaign to raise funds to move our radio ship Ross Revenge into dry dock for essential repairs to ensure her survival.
June 19th 2023 Update – Peter Moore reports:
Our Crowdfunder Campaign to raise funds for the Ross Revenge Dry Dock Appeal has now ended. A huge Thank You to everyone who donated. Your support and generosity are very much appreciated.
Crowdfunder is just one income source for our charity appeal. We were hoping in total to raise £125k. At this time funds stand at around £131k – which is excellent. We can now look at outside funding and grants.
There is no upper limit as to what could be spent on Ross Revenge. Fundraising for the ship has not ended but we have completed the first phase. The Crowdfunder remains active for donations.
Now patrons will be sought to advise us according to their specialised skills. Ross Revenge is on the National Historic Ships Register and while this organisation does not allocate funds, it will direct us and educate us where to seek Heritage or Commercial support.
We do note that the retired excursion steamer TS Queen Mary which lay derelict alongside side us in Tilbury Dock has now raised £3 million, such that the Trust that owns her and who previously thought to keep her on static display are now planning to make her a fully operational ship again. Bearing in mind that Queen Mary had her engines and boilers removed and scrapped decades ago and that she was not built for heavy duty service, this makes our own task less daunting.
I don’t know the exact type of this antenna and I don’t know about the manufacturer. IIRC there are similar ones in Russia, but I would need to find out the location out of the many I saved.
New news about Global and their MW services. Global to turn off AM transmitters for Gold outside London and Manchester on 30th June.
The URL with some news… https://radiotoday.co.uk/2023/06/global-to-turn-off-am-transmitters-for-gold-outside-london-and-manchester/ “Global is turning off more AM transmitters this month as Gold becomes digital only with the exception of London and Manchester. Gold’s mediumwave frequencies covering Peterborough/Cambridge (1332 kHz), Derby (945 kHz), Nottingham (999 kHz) and Northampton (1557 kHz) will all fall silent on June 30th.
It leaves just London (1548 kHz) and Manchester (1458 kHz) remaining for the network which once ruled the AM waveband across the UK as Classic Gold / Capital Gold, and formed part of the original ILR network. Other former Gold frequencies have either been turnedoff or rebranded to Smooth Radio.”
The international service of the Sri Lankan Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) recently doubled its Tamil Service airtime to two hours, on 873 kHz AM (medium wave) from Puttalam transmitter. The new schedule is 0130-0330 UTC (7.00 am to 9.00 am IST). This is partly in response to individual efforts of listeners, many in the southern part of India, in Bengaluru. Introducing this change, Colombo International Radio also announced that shortly they are going to use DRM on 1548 kHz.
This will be done by using the old transmitter of Deutsche Welle located in the north of Sri Lanka at Trincomalee. The Sri Lankan public broadcaster has started airing the DRM announcement here.
Our next Radio Caroline North broadcast is between 24th-25th June, live from our radio ship Ross Revenge.
You’ll hear some great music from the 60s to early 90s – plus a chance to win goodies from our Web Shop, kindly sponsored this time by Peter Roberts from Frimley, Surrey.

It seems that the Lessay [Normandy] mast at 49°08’55.0″N 1°30’16.0″W got demolished before March 2022. It transmitted Loran C navigation signals on 100 kHz. [Loran = long range navigation / Ed]
Radio Damascus on 567 kHz and Radio Sawt AL-Shabab on 666kHz are off air for about three weeks. The reason of an issue is unknown. Unfortunately there is no more MW stations from Syria on MW band.
However the FM TX power both of these stations: Radio Damascus on 92.7 MHz and Sawt AL-Shabab on 89.1 MHz, was increased after this.
