Lithuania

Radio Signal, the new station broadcasting from Lithuania on 666kHz as reported by Mauno Ritola yesterday was observed this morning at 0710UT, signing off every news report with their website URL: radiosignal.news.
The site includes a live audio stream and this statement: “Radio Signal is an information radio station. The most important topics of the day from the life of Belarus, comments from first persons, news from the union states, news from Europe and the world, chronicles of incidents, useful secrets, incredible facts, news from the world of stars, culture, information about holidays and historical events in Belarus and abroad. We talk about all this in an interesting and easy way! Radio Signal – details about the important things!”
So it’s aimed at Belarus rather than Russia – so is it in Russian, or Belarussian? Or both?

David Kernick, Interval Signals Online to WOR iog (2024-04-19)

Internet site radiosignal.news is in Russian only. It was reported that the broadcast was in Russian too. Looking at the site, I see that it is very similar in style to the Radio Lenta site.

Canada

332 MCW kHz, April 17 at 0648 UT, dash and QT, 1000 watt nondirexional beacon at Thunder Bay, Ontario, mixing with much closer but just as weak IC, wIChita KS, allegedly 400 watts per dxinfocentre, but I`ll go with 25 watts as in RNA list.

346 MCW kHz, April 17 at 0649 UT, dash and YXL, 1000 watt NDB at Sioux Lookout ON. These are JBA vs still high line noise level worst at LW and MW, no longer SW. Glad to be hearing any Canadians as they sink into general summer noise level.

WQVR(AM) Is Granted CP to Use HEBA Antenna at Night.
Developer believes antenna’s smaller footprint can help reduce property needed for AM operators.
The FCC in March granted an application for a construction permit filed by WQVR(AM) 940 in Webster, Mass., requesting licensed nighttime operation.
This is noteworthy because WQVR has been licensed to operate during daytime hours with a High-Efficiency Broadband Antenna or HEBA, developed by Worldwide Antenna Systems.

As well as the CFRN item below, similar requests for license revocation are expected soon for the other Bell Media stations that went off the air last year.
Despite a dismal financial outlook for the next year, Corus is unlikely to follow Bell’s example of shutting down money-losing radio and television stations. The Book Value of these stations is collateral for some Corus financing; shutting down a station could trigger a demand for repayment by the lenders involved. Corus owns major market AM stations including CKNW-980 and CKGO-730 in BC, CHED-630, CHQT-880 and CHQR-770 in AB, CJOB-680 in MB, and CFIQ-640 in ON.
It should be noted that when a station suddenly is no longer listed in Canada’s official list of allocated
frequencies/stations, it may have already been off the air for several years. Which may be the case for CFYI-790 and CHYW-1630, listed below.

530 ON Brampton CHLO
Still running hybrid HD (IBOC) with some of their listeners with HD receivers expressing appreciation for the noise-free audio. They are the only station using HD on AM in Canada.

560 NB Sussex CJCW
The CRTC finalized conditions of service for the move to FM on April 8th, most notably the implementation of the National Public Alerting System (NPAS) by the time of the FM’s launch.

600 QC Montreal CFQR
The CRTC has received an Application to change the ownership of the station from TTP Media to Phil Richards.

790 ON Caledon East CFYI
This 30 watt Tourist Information station is no longer listed in Canada’s official list of allocated frequencies/stations.

870 BC Invermere CKIR
Strong signal into Edmonton on two recent nights, likely indicating they are stuck on 1KW day power.

910 AB Drumheller CKDQ
The CRTC finalized conditions of service for the move to FM on April 8th, most notably the implementation of the National Public Alerting System (NPAS) by the time of the FM’s launch.

940 QC Montreal CFNV
The CRTC has received an Application to change the ownership of the station from TTP Media to Phil Richards.

1260 AB Edmonton CFRN
Bell Media only requested revocation of the station’s license on March 6th, but the CRTC revoked the license on April 10th. The station has been off the air since last June and the towers were knocked down soon after. Still no word on the other Bell stations that went off the air at the same time, last June.

1280 QC Montreal CFMB
Still no hybrid HD (IBOC) yet, and no public comments from owner Evanov, who also runs CHLO-530.

1340 BC Elkford CJEV
Slogan changed from Real Country 94.9 to New Country 94.9. To reflect the fact that this is a 50 watt rebroadcast transmitter of CJPR-FM 94.9 MHz Crowsnest Pass AB.

1630 ON Ottawa CHYW
This 99 watt Airport Information station is no longer listed in Canada’s official list of allocated frequencies/stations.

United States

Google-translated from French:
As strong spring storms swept across the United States last week, two West Virginia AM broadcast towers were toppled by winds exceeding 90 mph on Wednesday evening. Both towers are owned by WCHS, The Voice of Charleston: a news station serving the Charleston area.
WCHS, the cornerstone of the West Virginia MetroNews network and a vital news source in the south and southwest of the state, was faced with a temporary shutdown of its operations. The station, also a vital part of the state’s emergency alert system, is expanding its reach with two FM translators, which were also affected.
The tower collapse also affected WCHS’s sister station, WSWW-AM [1490 kHz / Ed]. Both managed to resume their broadcasts the following Thursday.
This is the fourth major radio transmitter incident in 2024. A site in Oklahoma was knocked out of service following copper thefts in January, an AM station in Alabama was reported to have had its tower stolen in February and a North Carolina AM station had its broadcast equipment destroyed by a fire in March. Now in April it’s WCHS’s turn.
