Japan

According to the announcement on March 24 2024, Nippon Hoso (JOLF 1242kHz 100kW/ 93.0MHz 7kW), one of the largest commercial AM station in Tokyo,  they will end AM stereo service on 1242kHz on March 31. Since AM stereo facilities are no longer manufactured, it is difficult to maintain them in the future.

They also announced they no longer verify reception reports by QSL card from Japanese domestic listeners. QSL card will be sent to the foreign listeners only from April 2024.

AM stereo in Japan began on March 15 1991 using C-QUAM type. In the 1990’s there were 16 AM stereo stations(commercial stations only, no NHK stations) at most. In the 2000’s most stations ceased stereo operation. Nippon Hoso was the 3rd from the end. At this time only Radio Osaka(JOUF 1314kHz 50kW) and Wakayama Hoso(JOVF 1431kHz 5kW) are using AM stereo.

By the way Nippon Hoso can be heard in stereo on FM93.0MHz and internet (radiko – in Japan only).

I’ve noticed for several nights that Radio Studio X on 1188kHz cuts transmission between 2200 UTC and 0420 UTC, leaving the 1190kHz channel free.

Attention fellow Northwesterners:
KLFE-1590 is off the air for the second time this week.  It’s apparently been that way for several hours
now.  Last time the station was off for about a day.  We’ll see how long it’s off this time.
Right now I’m hearing 2-3 weak domestics.

Re.: https://mediumwave.info/2024/04/11/new-zealand-31/

Well the 86 year old Collins receiver at Village Radio finally woke up at 1912 UTC but is definitely showing its vintage.
Frequency initially 1367.974 but jumped down to 1367.928 after 30 seconds and was fairly stable thereafter.
(Normal Vintage Radio operating hours are daytime only and the 7am NZT (1900 UTC) start is a little earlier than usual.
Local sunrise time for Tauranga that day is about 1840 UTC.)

KVF Faroes back on air.
This station on 531kHz is back on air. ( I reported it off air on 24 March and it has been silent since then).

It must have returned in the last 48hrs but I was unable to check due to BDMR downtime.
I’m not sure why KVF has been silent so long because I believe they have a main and a standby transmitter.
I tried (and failed) to find any public information online about the silence or the return to the air of the MW transmitter. Perhaps the station and listeners don’t care?
