Former pirate radio structures in the Thames estuary to feature on Radio 4 next week.

Interesting blurb on the BBC web site about the upcoming Radio 4 “Open Country” programme (30 May at 3 pm) on the Thames forts.
Martha Kearney visits Whitstable to discover the fascinating and mysterious story behind Guy Maunsell’s sea forts at Shivering Sands. Built in the second world war as air defences, these towers can still be seen from the shoreline, although they are now in a state of disrepair.
Martha discovers their incredible and strange history. Once home to up to 265 soldiers, these huge metal boxes on stilts later became the base for a broadcasting revolution. In the 1960s, pirate stations such as Radio City, Invicta and the short-lived Radio Sutch (run by the musician and parliamentary candidate Screaming Lord Sutch), broadcast from the sea forts to huge audiences who wanted to hear the latest pop and rock records.
Tom Edwards and Bob Leroi are two of the DJs with fond memories of their time aboard the sea forts at Shivering Sands, but there is also a darker history. David Featherbe’s father was lost at sea after visiting the Red Sands fort and foul play was suspected. These mysteries and the forts imposing physical architecture fascinate historian Flo McEwan and many artists such as Stephen Turner and Sue Carfrae.
Today the forts lie empty and are slowly being lost to the sea, but they remain a source of inspiration to artists and photographers, as Martha discovers.

Radio Luce, operating from Rimini (Italy) on 1584 kHz, is currently transmitting on the wrong frequency of 1585 kHz.
If you see a carrier there, or hear a 1000 Hz beatment, you know what it is.

After divesting its two FMs, Knight Broadcasting will shut down Conservative Talk 1440 KUHL Santa Maria/106.3 K292HD Los Alamos CA at the end of May.
Knight Broadcasting is in the process of selling Country “105.9 Krazy Country” KRAZ Santa Ynez/Santa Barbara to Erron Vela and Stefan Carpenter’s Santa Ynez Valley Media Inc. for $300,000 and donating AC “Mix 96.7” KSYV Solvang to California Lutheran University for its Public News/Talk network based at 88.3 KCLU-FM Thousand Oaks.
Employees were notified on Wednesday morning via an email from owner Sandra Knight. She told the staff that the station will cease operations at the end of the month when the divestiture of its other stations completes. The company’s studio building in Santa Maria is currently listed for sale for $1.275 million and she said they needed to vacate by June 1. KUHL’s five employees will be paid through June 15.
In the email, Knight also noted that she will be selling all of KUHL’s studio and transmission equipment. No word yet if she plans to take the station silent or simply surrender the license. She took over management of the stations following the 2022 death of her husband, Shawn Knight in a paragliding accident.
