Radio Archives

Dear MW enthusiasts,

I would like to announce a video presenting the current state of the open source/open data project COHIRADIA in an illustrative and lively manner. The video is addressing people interested in historic AM broadcasting, in particular collectors of radio receivers, organizers of radio museums and organizers of related exhibitions. As reported in the past, COHIRADIA provides a unique platform for the playback of whole, original broadcasting bands like MW, LW or SW on analogue AM radios so that all contained stations at the time of recording can be tuned through and listened to. COHIRADIA is hosting software, hardware recommendations and a steadily growing archive of freely accessible recordings back to 2006 in a universally readable digital IQ format. The archive is open for any interested person, so feel free to visit the COHIRADIA webpage and do not hesitate to contact me in case of questions (email see CONTACT section on the webpage).

In order to increase the diversity of the collection, we are interested in finding international radio amateurs from all over the world, who possess similar historic broadband IQ recordings and who are willing to share their ‘treasures’ with the community. So if you possess such recordings and/or know people who do so, please contact me.

If I could make you courious, please watch the video , recommend it to others who might be interested and leave a ‘thumb up’ if you like it.

Best regards, many 73 and have fun, Hermann Scharfetter (2024-12-07)

New York Public Radio Delays 820 WNYC(AM)’s All-Digital AM Test.
Shultis says the delay will give Nautel time to build a newer NX series transmitter

Published: December 4, 2024
820 WNYC(AM) is postponing its all-digital MA3 test of AM HD Radio.
Steve Shultis, New York Public Radio’s chief technology officer, said he wants to ensure the test represents an equal comparison with the AM’s analog signal. “As we analyzed our current equipment further, we discovered we would have had to reduce the transmitter power in order to achieve the desired RF mask with the all-digital carrier,” Shultis told Radio World.

The tests were planned for Dec 8th and will be rescheduled in 2025.

SAQ Grimeton: wideband recordings from centennial available

In the COHIRADIA archive there are now two new AM-wideband recordings from 2024-12-01 which contain the signal from SAQ Grimeton on 17.2 kHz while airing a special message during its centennial of the first commercial transatlantic transmission in 1924 (full story see here). Recording 1 was made by Walter Barteczek in Neunkirchen-Seelscheid (D) and contains a VLF-wideband IQ-file extending from 10 – 60 kHz with a clear and well-readable signal. Recording 2, made by Hermann Scharfetter in Graz (AT), extends from 10 – 260 kHz. It contains, in addition to VLF, the LW band including several LW broadcasting stations. The SNR of SAQ in recording 2 is surprisingly good, reaching approx. 30dB.

Both recordings can be downloaded freely and played back with software for software defined radios (e.g. SDRUno) and contain the complete frequency spectrum which was received at the respective QTHs. They can also be played back on analogue equipment when using the hardware/software platform supported by COHIRADIA.

Footnote: The files, though having the extension ‘wav’, are no audio files and thus cannot be played back with standard audio players. Use SDRUno, SDR#, SDR-Angel, HDSDR or similar tools.
