Experience the wings of history where they are really heard!
On the 5th of July 2026 the World Heritage Grimeton Radio Station and the Alexander Grimeton Friendship Association invite you to the Alexanderson Day – a unique and lively family day filled with technology, culture and world-class experiences.
During the day, the radio station is brought to life with the legendary Alexanderson Alternator (SAQ), the only one of its kind in the world that still works.
The unique Alexanderson alternator from 1924, with the call sign SAQ, is scheduled for two transmissions over the antenna on VLF 17.2 kHz CW.
To attend one of the transmissions in the transmitter hall, a ticket will be required.
You can book you ticket here already now (recommended).

A full program of all activities on the 2026 Alexanderson Day will soon be available on grimeton.org.

10:30 CEST (08:30 UTC) Start-up of the Alternator begins.

Second transmission:

Live Video from World Heritage Grimeton Radio Station
On this Alexanderson Day there will be no live video from the transmissions, due to staffing difficulties. Instead, the Alexander association team will fully focus on bringing SAQ out in the ether.
We ask for your understanding.

Test Transmissions

We are planning for some test transmissions, preliminary on July 2nd or 3rd between 13:00 – 16:00 CEST (we will confirm as soon as we can). During the tests, SAQ will be on air shorter periods of time, when we will be carrying out some tests and measurements.

ANOTHER CME IS COMING: The sun just launched another CME toward Earth. Minor (G1) to strong (G3) geomagnetic storms are possible when it arrives on June 8th. If the storm becomes strong, naked-eye auroras could spread across much of Europe, Canada, and at least a dozen northern-tier US states. Full story @ Spaceweather.com.

J.R. Dunn’s Forrest Jack Investments Country 1400 KRUN Ballinger TX abruptly ceased operations on Wednesday after weeks of ongoing damage from storms.

KRUN lost parts of its roof in May, while subsequent storms have flooded the building and caused the ceiling to collapse in five rooms. Dunn told KLST-TV’s Concho Valley Homepage, “It’s rained for 3.5 weeks. I’ve had maybe four days of good weather where it did not rain, but it hadn’t been enough time to get a roof on. With that … we’re sitting there with 2 inches, 3 inches of water setting in the floor of the station.”

He told the television station that in order to restore operations he would need a benefactor or benefactors to fund an estimated $125,000 in repairs to the building. He said, “Unless we can find a benefactor or someone who’s willing to invest some money in it that can do better than myself, I think we’re just sitting there at yes, we probably will have to end it. After 80 years, it’s a tough deal to go through, and for me to be the one that loses it really hurts also, personally.” He continued, “The economics of Ballinger, Miles and Winters no longer are what they used to be, and with several of the companies coming in that are national chains, they have dropped any advertising that was going on before, and it has really affected the radio station.”

A note on the station’s website states, “Since August 1947, KRUN-AM 1400 has been proud to serve Ballinger, Runnels County, and the AgriPlex of Central West Texas. Today, following the devastating storm damage to our facilities, KRUN-AM signs off for the final time. We are deeply grateful for every listener, advertiser, employee, broadcaster, coach, athlete, farmer, rancher, business owner, and friend who made this station part of their lives. Thank you for allowing us into your homes, vehicles, farms, ranches, and businesses for generations. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our loyal employees Steve Everett, Gary Everett, and Kristi Smith for their years of dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment to KRUN-AM 1400 and our community. While the airwaves may fall silent, the memories never will. May God bless Ballinger, Runnels County, and the AgriPlex.”

The BBC has announced that its Long Wave service on 198kHz, currently transmitting BBC Radio 4, will close on 27 June 2026 at 1am BST.
The Long Wave transmitters at Droitwich in Worcestershire, Westerglen near Stirling, and Burghead overlooking the Moray Firth, will be closed that day. Together with the BBC Amateur Radio Group, we will be marking this occasion on the air and are looking for volunteers to activate a special call sign in the week leading up to and including the day of the closure.

In addition, three radio clubs have volunteered to activate special call signs to celebrate the almost-92 years of these historic transmitters on the day that they are finally turned off.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WARNING: NOAA forecasters are predicting strong geomagnetic storms this week as a rare ‘anti-Hale’ sunspot peppers Earth with strong solar flares. The X-class and near-X-class explosions are currently happening every 6 to 8 hours with CMEs expected to reach our planet beginning June 5th. Mid-latitude auroras are possible after the CMEs arrive. Solar activity is intensifying today following a strong M9-class solar flare from anti-Hale sunspot 4455.
“Anti-Hale” means the sunspot has a reversed-polarity magnetic field, which makes it unstable and explosive.
The CME produced by today’s explosion is expected to reach Earth on June 5th, according to a NASA model.
