Local info on Newfoundland MW.
On some Canadian stations I have been surprised to note that it is possible to hear local audio that I didn’t previously know existed.
The CBC Newfoundland stations carry a selection of local IDs at hh:59 in the evenings. See https://groups.io/g/mwcircle/message/21134 – these IDs are not unique – the Newfoundland station IDs rotate and are common on all the NL frequencies (640, 750, 1400). The ID on 1140 (Nova Scotia) is specific.
However, I have also noticed that they carry a local one-minute weather forecast at 23:29:30. There is a forecast for several areas on Newfoundland beginning with the “St.Johns and the Avalon” area on the Newfoundland stations (640, 750, 1400). There is a different forecast at the same time on 1140 for “Cape Breton <+ two other locations I couldn’t understand>” – this one only lasts 30 seconds and is followed by a thirty-second CBC promo. These forecast seem to follow the same grouping as the IDs mentioned above.
Meanwhile, on VOCM, there are local adverts and community news. On 620 at 0018, I heard a promotion for the St. Patrick’s Day Supper at the St. Joseph’s Parish Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor. At the same time on 710 was a promo for a winter hike with the Clarenville Area Recreation Association. Again at the same time, 590 was carrying an advert for hearing loss remedies. On 570, “In Corner Brook, get ready to dive into the stories of Newfoundland and Labrador like never before. picturenl is rolling out the red carpet…”. These announcements are unique on each frequency. 870 is almost impossible at this QTH so I cannot comment. 650 seems to have something different too, but there is bad QRM from a heavily-promoted (on this forum) UK relic on 648kHz.
It is always more satisfactory to find audio that relates to a specific transmitter.
