Just for the record. Deutsche Welle cancelled its broadcasts via Lithuania 1386 kHz, most probably from July 1 (exactly two years after their start on July 1, 2022). In early July I heard only the DW famous interval signal instead of programming. Its former time slot 18:00-18:30 UTC is occupied by Radio Liberty again. DW schedules dated July 1 also show no Russian anymore.–

880 WCBS has requested a callsign change to WHSQ effective from 26th August. This is the date when the LMA between the owners Audacy and Good Karma Bands that brings the format change is scheduled to begin.
FCC broadcasting history cards first list the station as WABC licensed on 20th September 1924, and WBOQ licensed on 26th March 1925, with these calls being combined on 11th November 1928. The two stations operated on various frequencies, but the combined station settled on 860kHz. Still on 860, the WBOQ call was dropped on 15th June 1940. It moved to 880 under the NARBA changes of 1941. The call changed to WCBS on 2nd November 1946 (according to a copy of an notice displayed on Wikipedia), though the date of this change is not recorded in the FCC records.
WCBS has broadcast using these same call letters on 880kHz since June 1946 and became an all-news station in 1967.

60 years ago, TWR – Trans World Radio put the most powerful radio station in the Caribbean into service on medium waves. Bonaire is a Dutch island 150 km from Venezuela. This is where TWR got permission to broadcast. Under Dutch sovereignty, the radio was not supposed to comply with American power limitations. But the costs associated with operating and maintaining a high-power tube facility ultimately forced TWR to rethink its strategy and short waves were halted in 1993. TWR also wanted to reduce its emissions to medium waves: the 500 kW transmitter and its electric generator were too high charges.
In 1998, TWR reduced its medium-wave power by installing a more economical transmitter: a 100 kW NX100 from Nautel – AM FM Broadcast
The operating license for the 500 kW medium wave transmitter has been revoked and a new license (PJB3-AM) has been issued for 100 kW. 500kW transmitter sold and leaving the island.
Twelve years later, in 2012, the transmitters have evolved again and TWR is making the decision to increase the station’s power to close to its original level. The radio wants to become a major regional station in Latin and Central America, to complement the small on-air FM operations in the region.
Authorities allow TWR to increase its power to 450 kW.
From 2012 to 2016 TWR is raising funds to allocate the necessary capital.
In 2016 Kintronic Labs is commissioned by TWR to provide a door-key new directional antenna system consisting of 4 231 meters poles arranged in parallelograms. This new multidirectional antenna system allows the station to target specific audiences at different times of the day.
In July 2017, the new RF system came into service using their existing 100kW transmitter.
During the installation of the antenna, TWR ordered its new transmitter with more than 90% efficiency: a semiconductor transmitter. This is the Nautel NX400 model that was selected for the project. The forecasted economy was double, compared to the first issuer: an economy of nearly 30% on energy and a much fewer personnel.
January 31, 2018, the new 450 kW medium wave transmitter Nautel Broadcast is inaugurated. It represents a $3.8 million investment. On this occasion TWR which used the name Radio Trans Mundial becomes Shine 800 AM.
Improving power and coverage helps to spread Christian programming on a wide area, but it’s also helpful in other ways. In case of an emergency, nothing beats medium waves, for example, when hurricanes have hit the Antilles.
At this time programmes are modified to inform people about weather, encourage disaster relief and to speak to local residents live or to be made available to the governments of the West Indies.

Good Karma Brands To LMA 880 WCBS From Audacy Following 98.7 Sign-Off
Audacy has announced a licensing deal with Good Karma Brands in which the company will move the programming of “ESPN New York” 98.7 WEPN-FM to 880 WCBS effective August 26.
The LMA will see 880 end its 57 year run with all-News just two days shy of its anniversary and change call letters to WHSQ. All of the content currently heard on 98.7 WEPN-FM will move to 880, with the station retaining Audacy’s production of New York Mets baseball. The deal takes effect as Good Karma’s lease with Emmis Communications for 98.7 comes to an end.

KHRT in North Dakota Goes Silent After 60 Years.

Longtime North Dakota station KHRT(AM) and its sister station KHRT(FM) have gone off the air as of July 31, 2024. Located in Minot, N.D., the two Christian-format stations are locally-owned and operated by Faith Broadcasting. Now, the station owner is looking for a buyer.
Station manager and owner Roy Leavitt made the announcement across social media channels on July 23 that the stations would go silent. In his statement, Leavitt said “support and advertising has fallen to a level where Faith Broadcasting is no long able to continue operating the stations.”
KHRT(AM) signed on in 1964 and was purchased in 1982 by Leavitt’s father, Dick, who added the FM station in 1992.
KHRT(AM), formerly heard on 1320 kHz, is a Class B station broadcasting at 2.5 kW during the day and 310 watts at night. Its counterpart, KHRT(FM), formerly heard on 106.9 MHz, is a Class C2 station broadcasting at 50 kW.
Leavitt told Radio World that Faith Broadcasting is in the process of trying to find a buyer for the stations, saying “we are not letting the licenses go back to the FCC.”
In an email to Radio World, discussing KHRT’s financial hardship, he wrote: “With the current economic conditions I do not believe it’s going to get better any time soon. I made the decision to close the doors to stop the ongoing expenses. It’s just time for someone else to continue these signals in the Minot markets.”
Now, on KHRT’s website, the following statement is posted: “We are looking for a group or individual that would be interested in purchasing the KHRT radio stations (Either the FM station or both stations). If you know somebody that would be interested or if you are interested, please call Roy Leavitt for more details at (701) 818-4454.”
KHRT(AM) concentrated on a Southern gospel format and also aired satellite-fed programming from Salem Radio Network during overnights and weekends. Its FM counterpart was formatted as a Christian hot AC station.
