ERT Chania 1512 kHz back on the air.
A few hours before the meeting of the Municipal Council of Chania, today, Wednesday (28/5), with the first issue being the dismantling of the ERT antenna in lower Souda and the revocation of the concession of land from the former Community of Souda to the then EIR, for the construction of a radio transmitter, ERT announced that it had upgraded its Medium Wave equipment!
Thus, as of yesterday, the Medium Wave transmitter on frequency 1512, as well as the antenna, is back in operation.
With the announcement, ERT “informs the public about the completion of the equipment upgrade at the Medium Wave Broadcasting Center in Souda, Chania.”

“This upgrade is part of the strategic plan to modernize ERT’s radio facilities, with the aim of upgrading broadcast quality and strengthening radio signal coverage throughout the territory.
The Souda Chania Broadcasting Center broadcasts in the Medium Wave (AM) band, at the frequency 1512 kHz and covers the wider area of Crete as well as the Cyclades islands, enhancing radio access in areas with limited FM coverage.
With this specific intervention, reliable and high-quality signal transmission is ensured and the most complete coverage of southeastern island Greece is achieved.”
Following this development, today’s discussion at the Chania Municipal Council is anticipated with particular interest!

WRCR 1700/WABC ownership correxion.

I am obliged to correct one aspect of my earlier message.
Alexander and Red Apple signed an Asset Purchase Agreement (in January 2025 but its actual date was left blank!) in which Alexander agreed to sell WRCR to Red Apple. On 24th April, the agreement was amended confirming the agreement date as 24th April. The amendment listed a number of repairs that Alexander had to undertake conditional to the sale. On the same date, Alexander and Red Apple entered into a Local Programming and Marketing Agreement which sees Red Apple’s 77 WABC programming being heard on 1700 WRCR. This is what led to the change to WABC programming being heard in early May.
Yesterday, an Assignment of Authorisation was submitted to the FCC. Legally FCC must approve the assignment of a station’s licence from one licensee to another. Part of the Asset Purchase Agreement is that the licence be transferred to the buyer. Until this has been done, the station is still owned by Alexander Broadcasting.

I therefore correct my earlier message – WRCR has not yet been sold, so Red Apple Media have not yet “bought” WRCR. It is, for the time being, still owned by Alexander Broadcasting Inc.

Sweden

Gothenburg special-event station observed on 981kHz.
On the occasion of the Gothenburg Classic Car Weekend (24-25 May) a broadcast from the city’s radio museum was observed on 981kHz mediumwave from 0830UT tune-in on 24 May. Programming was 1930s British popular music such as “The Lambeth Walk” and Swedish versions of old UK/US pop hits such as “Leva Livet” (Lesley Gore’s “It’s My Party”). Announcements were few and far between and of course in Swedish but eventually there was something resembling an ID – not the name of the station as such but identification as “a broadcast from the radio museum in Gothenburg” followed by the frequency. This low-powered (10W) weak and noisy signal was only traceable via a remote webSDR situated in Grötö, an island in the Gothenburg archipeligo. I was expecting the station to also be on air today (Sunday 25 May), the second day of the car event, but there’s no trace as of 0800UT.

Norway

A request has been received for a frequency licence to use 1575 kHz. This means that someone wants to transmit radio on medium wave in the Bergen area.

Most people today listen to radio via digital sources such as DAB or the internet and some still listen to local radio on FM, but interest in listening to radio on medium wave has not been that great in recent years.
However, the Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom) has now received an application for a frequency licence to use 1575 kHz for broadcasting. This gives all interested parties the opportunity to apply for this licence, in case anyone else also wants to broadcast radio on the medium wave.
The transmitter point for 1575 kHz has been notified to the ITU for a 1 kW transmitter with omnidirectional antenna, located at Erdal, Bergen. Nkom cannot guarantee that the transmitter point can be notified and approved for use elsewhere in the country.
In order to be able to use the frequencies for broadcasting transmission, you must also have a site licence. The Norwegian Media Authority is responsible for granting site licences, and applications for site licences must be submitted to them by the same application deadline.
Those interested in this must let us know by 26 May 2025. The licence will be granted until 31 December 2026, according to Nkom.
According to radionytt.no, it is Northern Star Services that has registered its interest in broadcasting on 1575 Khz. The company has previously been granted a licence to broadcast on long wave, but this is said to have become too expensive to operate.
