CHIN 1540 Toronto, ON applies to move to 900kHz with much-reduced power.
CHIN is currently licensed for 50kW days and 30kW at night. It airs programmes in a wide variety of languages as the “Voice of Multicultural Toronto”, though it was heard often at night with old radio dramas under the “When Radio Was” syndication.
It is a surprise to me that CHIN has not been reported in the UK since January 2024. More of a surprise is that on 2nd July 2024, CHIN became “daytime only”. It seems that the station had to vacate their tx site on Toronto Island and moved to a new temporary location, using a sloping antenna on the site of CHLO 530. The site was limited to 16kW (daytime) and was unable to be used at night because protection for KXEL was impossible. Moreover, CRTC awarded CHIN 91.9MHz FM so the station could still be heard in Toronto at night, so they were able to close down the AM nightly and still be heard. Now, CHIN applies to move to an entirely different transmitter site operating on 900kHz with 435W days and 300W at night. The new transmitter site will be on top of a garage belonging to the Korean Philadelphia Presbyterian Church North York, Toronto.
If CRTC approve, then CHIN will become almost impossible to hear in Europe.
