Australia

990 6RPH Perth, 1179 3RPH Melbourne & 1197 5RPH Adelaide to go QRT in July.

Well this is quite a surprise:

No word on 2RPH Sydney (1224 kHz), 4RPH Brisbane (1296 kHz), or 7RPH Hobart (864 kHz) as yet. These three are outside the Vision Australia Radio branding so I assume they will be staying on.

I realise AM transmitters must cost a bit to keep running with the power requirements, but it does seem a strange decision. Even here at Waitara not that far from the Artarmon transmitters the DAB+ signal was a bit flaky, you had to make sure the antenna was in a certain position to avoid dropouts. And I am sure there are plenty of area in those cities where DAB+ would just not be available where the AM signal would be audible.
Having someone vision impaired trying to find the station on DAB+ could also be a problem. You can’t just talk to a DAB+ receiver and say “tune to Vision Radio”. As well as typing in the correct web address to get the online stream.
I wonder if those frequencies will be resold for a commercial operation? Don’t know if there are any plans for the two vacated ABC Perth AM channels.
