Mexico

In the early hours of Tuesday, May 5, an AM transmission tower belonging to NRM Comunicaciones, one of Mexico City’s major radio companies, collapsed. The tower was located on a property on Playa Rosarito Street in the Santiago Sur neighborhood of the Iztacalco borough. Fortunately, the incident occurred early in the morning and within the property, and no injuries were reported. This tower broadcast the programs of Sabrosita 590 AM (XEPH-AM), Radio Mil 1000 AM (XEOY-AM), and Sabrosita 1410 AM (XEBS-AM).
The structure collapsed onto the control room located in the center of the property. Minor damage was observed on the roof. According to Medium, the transmitters are located in the northeast corner of the property; however, the building itself was not affected by the incident. The newspaper Basta covered the story and reported that neighbors might oppose any attempt by the company to replace the structure, fearing it is not fully anchored to the ground and could collapse again. Neighbors told authorities they heard a loud short circuit before the collapse, which prompted a call for help. Telediario also reported that NRM employees arrived at the scene but were unable to access the property. It is worth noting that this same antenna collapsed about 20 years ago. For now, the stations remain out of service, and NRM has not issued any public statement regarding the 120-meter-high structure.
