Programming stopped at 01.00 BST last night, and now there is loop telling, that “You are listening to 198 kHz LW – BBC Radio 4 is no longer available on this frequency” and information on how to continue to listen to BBC Radio 4.

Here’s how strong the 400 Watter from Dalby sounded like this morning.  Instead of a local ID, though, twice I heard the ID for 1611 AM Hot Country, Goondiiwindi at 11:44 and 11:34 UTC this morning!

Call for wideband AM recordings during the closure of BBC4 on LW

Dear friends of AM radio,

As reported in several postings (e.g.https://mediumwave.info/2026/06/24/united-kingdom-590/) the legendary Droitwich LW transmitter on 198 kHz will go silent on June 27 in the early morning.

The COHIRADIA team (www.cohiradia.org) will make broadband IQ recordings during he last hours of the LW band to preserve the LW signal for playback in the future. However, there is no member directly located in UK, so the signal quality will depend on atmospheric conditions. We would therefore be glad if a volunteer who possess an adequate high-quality SDRs and who is located in or close to UK could help us capture broadband AM recordings in or near the UK. If you’re able to assist—or know someone who can — please reach out to me hermann.scharfetter@gmail.com

To avoid confusion: We require full wideband recordings in IQ file format, say 130 – 300 kHz LW at least or, even better, say 100 – 1800 kHz for capturing both, LW and MW at the same time. We do not look for audio recordings of individual stations. Ideally, these recordings should be made at a site with low QRM using a high-quality SDR with at least 12-bit resolution.

Closure will be at 1am BST, but we would appreciate a recording over several hours, starting maybe tomorrow, on 26th of June around 19:00 UTC.

837 KHz Quanzhou, China verified still on air. The signal punches through all Australian 837 KHz stations during late evenings. The full compliment of Quanzhou, Chinese high power stations are received most evenings after circa 9:00 pm.

Over the past six years iHeartMedia Sports 1460 KXNO Des Moines has gone from having the majority of its local airstaff let go, to having them rehired and the station adding an FM simulcast on 106.3 KXNO-FM Ankeny, and becoming a statewide network in August 2024, to now having its lineup gutted yet again.

As part of the massive restructuring going on at the company, KXNO and the statewide “Iowa Sports Network” heard on “Sports Radio 95.7” KOSY-FM Anamosa/Cedar Rapids, 620 KMNS Sioux City, 800 KXIC Iowa City, and 1230 WFXN Moline IL/Quad Cities have cut ties with its morning and afternoon shows.

“BBC Radio 4 broadcasts on Long Wave will end on 27 June 2026, ahead of the Long Wave platform closing on 30 June 2026.

The Long Wave infrastructure is owned and operated by a third party who have advised us the platform is now coming to the end of its life as a technology. Continuing would require significant investment to replace ageing equipment and sustain a platform now used by a very small proportion of listeners.

Digital listening has also grown significantly over the past decade, with the majority of UK radio listening now taking place digitally or online. The BBC’s focus is on investing in platforms that best serve audiences and provide resilient coverage for the future.

The BBC first announced in 2022 that it expected Long Wave to close, and in March 2024 ended separate scheduling on Radio 4 Long Wave in anticipation of this change.

No programmes will be lost as a result of the closure. Radio 4’s programmes and services previously associated with Long Wave will continue to be available across other BBC platforms.

Radio 4 remains widely available on FM, DAB, BBC Sounds, smart speakers and television platforms, including Freeview, satellite and connected TV. FM remains the main fallback option and is available to 99.5% of UK households.

Over the past months we have provided clear information to help listeners move to alternative ways of receiving Radio 4. This includes on-air interruption messages, support through BBC help pages and phone support via the BBC Helpdesk.

We also work closely with organisations that support vulnerable audiences around platform closures, to ensure listeners are helped in a timely and sensitive way.

Long Wave is not classified as Critical National Infrastructure.
