The three transmission masts in Beidweiler (known as “Beidler” in Luxembourgish), located in the municipality of Junglinster, Luxembourg, are set to be demolished by explosives on Friday, November 6, at 3:00 PM. The German firm Liesegang, based in Hürth, is handling the placement of the explosive charges, and preparations are reportedly already well underway. While it had long been known that the transmission masts in Junglinster itself would also be removed, a specific time has now been set for the masts in Beidweiler.

The demolition is attracting interest from beyond the region as well. Those unable to be present in Luxembourg to witness the event can follow the demolition online from the Netherlands. RTL is capturing the dismantling process—in both sound and vision—and broadcasting it live via a livestream.

The three masts in Beidweiler are owned by Broadcasting Center Europe (BCE), a subsidiary of the RTL Group. From 1972 until 1:00 a.m. on January 2, 2023, they were used to broadcast RTL’s French-language radio programming toward France via longwave. The installation consists of three identical 290-meter-tall masts, which are held upright by guy wires. The masts in Junglinster are constructed differently: they widen toward the base and stand upright without additional support, whereas the masts in Beidweiler cannot remain standing without their guy wires.

It is not yet known when the steel lattice masts in Junglinster will be demolished. They stand 215 meters tall, though at the time of their construction in 1954 and 1955 (with a third added in 1959), they were 250 meters high. In 1983, they were shortened to their current height. For a long time, they served as a backup transmitter for Beidweiler.
