Oldies 1510 WMEX/101.1 W266DQ Quincy/Boston MA ceased operations today.
The shutdown follows a sale of the station to Tyler Nye’s Local Media Boston and short-lived shift from Oldies to Classic Hits. Since returning to Oldies, it has relied on programming from the syndicated “True Oldies Channel“.

The station posted the following message on its website:

“Today, September 30, 2026, marks the final day of broadcasting for WMEX.
As we sign off, we want to say something that can never be said enough: thank you.

Thank you to every listener who tuned in over the years—whether you listened every day, joined us on your drive to work, turned us up at home, discovered us online, or simply stopped on the dial and stayed awhile. You gave WMEX a reason to be on the air.

Radio has always been about more than transmitters, studios, music, and microphones. It is about the connection created between a station and the people listening on the other side. It is about being part of a community, sharing moments together, and creating memories through the music and voices coming out of the speakers.

To everyone who has been part of WMEX over the years—our listeners, personalities, staff, advertisers, partners, friends, and supporters—thank you for being part of our story.

There have been countless songs played, conversations shared, requests made, contests won, laughs had, and memories created. While the broadcast may end, those memories remain.

It has been our privilege to have a place on your radio dial and, more importantly, to have been welcomed into your homes, cars, workplaces, and lives.

So, as WMEX signs off for the final time, we do so with tremendous gratitude for everyone who came along for the ride.

Thank you for listening.
Thank you for supporting local radio.
Thank you for the memories.

From all of us at WMEX, it has truly been an honor.

For the final time, this is WMEX—signing off.”

MEDI 1 171 kHz
This station was broadcasting regularly until (pres) the end of the first week in September. I received a message from Jorge Jaroslavski pointing to the station without transmitting signal since at least the second week of September.
As I could monitor today, Medi 1 is off right now! Faulty Txer?

Czechia

In mid-October, Czechia will lose the country’s tallest structure: two steel radio transmitter masts in the village of Liblice near Český Brod will be brought down in a controlled explosion. This pair of 355-metre towers has loomed over the surrounding area for half a century and, according to the site’s owner, would cost more to repair than to demolish.

Owners of neighbouring properties have already received notices: during the blasting operation, being present within the designated safety zones will be prohibited. Once demolished, the landmark that has been part of the local landscape for half a century will disappear from the horizon.

The current pair of steel masts was built in 1976, with the ceremonial launch taking place on 28 December 1976. Each mast reaches a height of 355 metres — taller than the Eiffel Tower including its antenna (330 metres). At the time of construction, the structures were considered a remarkable technical achievement.

Originally, the transmitter broadcast the second programme of what was then Czechoslovak Radio on medium wave. The combined output of the two towers reached 1,500 kilowatts, allowing the signal to cover a significant part of the country. Czech Radio stopped broadcasting on medium wave at the end of 2021. Country Radio continued transmitting on the same frequency from Liblice for a while afterward — it shut down on 31 March 2025. Since then, no radio station has broadcast from the site.

České Radiokomunikace, the company that owns the masts, found no further use for them, and keeping them standing would have required extensive and costly repairs. The most urgent task would have been a complete replacement of the guy-wire anchors, at a cost of roughly 120 million crowns. Restoring the structures’ anti-corrosion protection would have cost about another 25 million crowns, and repairing the lifts inside the masts roughly the same amount. According to estimates, the most essential work alone would have cost around 170 million crowns.
