1260 AM Beverly Hills to Flip to Classic Country Format and Become KKGO-AM

1260 AM Beverly Hills is currently stunting with an all-Taylor Swift format.
On October 1, the station will begin a Classic Country format “playing country hits of the 1980s, ‘90s, and early 2000s,” and the call letters will change from KMZT (K-Mozart) to KKGO (AM).
At that time, Go Country 105 will change calls from KKGO to KKGO-FM. (The AM and FM will have different Country formats.)
The K-Mozart Classical format will continue on KKGO-FM HD2, as well in the San Fernando Valley on low-power translator K252FO 98.3 FM.
HD1 channels are always a simulcast of the analog signal. It’s unclear what format the KKGO-FM HD3 channel will carry, but reportedly it will not be KKGO-AM 1260.
However, the AM 1260 signal will be streamed, and it broadcasts in HD stereo. Saul Levine’s engineers have made 1260 AM sound amazing in HD.
(I once did a blind test with one of my friends and asked him which sounds better — Station A or Station B — and he replied, “Oh, Station A, definitely!” Station AM was 1260 AM in HD and Station B was the simulcast on HD2.)
KKGO-FM HD4 will continue to be K-Surf Oldies.

Thank you to Richard Wagoner’s newspaper column, and to Barrett Media, for this information.

Radio Caroline is to broadcast two special shows this weekend as a tribute to the Dutch pirate stations, marking the 50th anniversary of their closure. When the Marine Offences Act closed UK offshore pirates in August 1967, apart from Radio Caroline, some listeners turned to Dutch pirate station Radio Veronica, which wasn’t affected by the law. Radio Veronica was a pioneer, broadcasting responsibly with modest power, and was tolerated by the Dutch authorities for many years. However, the early 1970s saw an influx of new stations, including Radio North Sea together with Radio Caroline, which joined Veronica in broadcasting with high power. More stations began broadcasting off the Dutch coast causing intense competition and as tensions escalated, an incident occurred where an incendiary device set the RNI ship ablaze. By 1974, the Dutch government took action and despite Veronica’s efforts to gain public support, they too, along with other stations such as Radio Del Mare and Atlantis were forced to cease operations on 31st August that year. Once again, Radio Caroline defied the odds and continued to broadcast. To commemorate this moment in broadcasting history, this Saturday at 4pm on Radio Caroline’s album channel, Andre Van Os will be playing classic tracks from Dutch bands of the era, accompanied by original jingles, commercials, and airchecks from Radio Veronica, Atlantis and Radio North Sea. The show will also feature the final moments of these stations, aired exactly 50 years to the day from when they fell silent. Then, on Sunday 1st September on Caroline’s Flashback service at 10 am, Ray Clark will play a selection of relevant songs and read excerpts from listener emails, reflecting on the legacy of the Dutch offshore pirates.

Good Karma Brands To LMA 880 WCBS From Audacy Following 98.7 Sign-Off

Audacy has announced a licensing deal with Good Karma Brands in which the company will move the programming of “ESPN New York” 98.7 WEPN-FM to 880 WCBS effective August 26.
The LMA will see 880 end its 57 year run with all-News just two days shy of its anniversary and change call letters to WHSQ. All of the content currently heard on 98.7 WEPN-FM will move to 880, with the station retaining Audacy’s production of New York Mets baseball. The deal takes effect as Good Karma’s lease with Emmis Communications for 98.7 comes to an end.
Audacy New York Market President Chris Oliviero stated, ““New York has always been proudly unique in supporting two all-news radio brands, but the news business has gone through significant changes. The headwinds facing local journalism nationwide made it essential to strategically reimagine how we deliver the news for the most impact. WCBS 880 has been one of the most respected radio stations in history, with a legacy cemented by the hundreds of world-class journalists, on and off the air, who willed it into existence over the decades. If it happened in New York or the world, you heard about it on WCBS 880. Today, 1010 WINS@92.3FM, equally iconic, moves forward as New York’s only 24/7 all-news station with the best distribution platform, the largest audience and the most recognized brand in the industry. All-news is a pillar of Audacy, and this decision, though difficult, fortifies that leadership position for generations to come.”
Audacy will continue to program News on 1010 WINS/92.3 WINS-FM with the company stating, “Since the FM launch, 1010 WINS@92.3FM’s listenership has grown significantly in numbers and geographic reach, with a distribution platform better suited to go deeper into the surrounding Tri-State suburbs of Long Island, New Jersey, Westchester and Connecticut. Across FM, AM and digital platforms, nearly two million people a week come to 1010 WINS@92.3FM to get their news, traffic and weather.”
WCBS will host a special edition of “Newsline” hosted by Brigitte Quinn on Thursday, August 22 to pay tribute to the history of the station. “WCBS 880 News: The People, the Moments, and the Events that Shaped our Lives” will air from 10am to 1pm with interviews and historical clips.

Mexico

A format change is coming in Tijuana in which sports programming receives a red card and Catholic radio accesses XEPRS-AM 1090.

It’s the end of an era for XEPRS-AM in Tijuana. On Thursday, August 1, it will flip to Catholic radio from Monte María Radio, a Tijuana-based Catholic media ministry. The Mightier 1090 sports radio format that has been using the frequency will cease after just under four years on the air.

The Mightier 1090 launched August 17, 2020. It revived sports radio on the frequency after the financial problems of Broadcast Company of the Americas forced The Mighty 1090 off the air, first off XEPRS and then off a webstream, in April 2019. Its programming consists of local and national sports talk, including ESPN Radio since January 2022. Bill Hagen has programmed the station under what at the time was reported to be a five-year lease with its owners, the Bichara family (Interamericana de Radio).

The first announcement of the Monte María change was made by the Catholic group on July 19. As of the writing of this article, no programming or social media on The Mightier 1090 has indicated the forthcoming change. An attempt to contact Bill Hagen was unsuccessful as of press time.

For Monte María, this is a big move up for a group whose roots lie in radio. Padre Rayito founded the ministry in 2001 after being a fill-in on a religious radio program on XEXX-AM 1420. Monte María then went on to broadcast the Mass for Radio Fórmula’s XEKAM-AM 950, later growing to program 12 hours a day. In 2005, a television ministry was added, initially on San Diego’s low-power channel 61 and later with a slot on Sky in Mexico.
