A format change is coming in Tijuana in which sports programming receives a red card and Catholic radio accesses XEPRS-AM 1090.

It’s the end of an era for XEPRS-AM in Tijuana. On Thursday, August 1, it will flip to Catholic radio from Monte María Radio, a Tijuana-based Catholic media ministry. The Mightier 1090 sports radio format that has been using the frequency will cease after just under four years on the air.

The Mightier 1090 launched August 17, 2020. It revived sports radio on the frequency after the financial problems of Broadcast Company of the Americas forced The Mighty 1090 off the air, first off XEPRS and then off a webstream, in April 2019. Its programming consists of local and national sports talk, including ESPN Radio since January 2022. Bill Hagen has programmed the station under what at the time was reported to be a five-year lease with its owners, the Bichara family (Interamericana de Radio).

The first announcement of the Monte María change was made by the Catholic group on July 19. As of the writing of this article, no programming or social media on The Mightier 1090 has indicated the forthcoming change. An attempt to contact Bill Hagen was unsuccessful as of press time.

For Monte María, this is a big move up for a group whose roots lie in radio. Padre Rayito founded the ministry in 2001 after being a fill-in on a religious radio program on XEXX-AM 1420. Monte María then went on to broadcast the Mass for Radio Fórmula’s XEKAM-AM 950, later growing to program 12 hours a day. In 2005, a television ministry was added, initially on San Diego’s low-power channel 61 and later with a slot on Sky in Mexico.

Former pirate radio structures in the Thames estuary to feature on Radio 4 next week.

Interesting blurb on the BBC web site about the upcoming Radio 4 “Open Country” programme (30 May at 3 pm) on the Thames forts.
Martha Kearney visits Whitstable to discover the fascinating and mysterious story behind Guy Maunsell’s sea forts at Shivering Sands. Built in the second world war as air defences, these towers can still be seen from the shoreline, although they are now in a state of disrepair.
Martha discovers their incredible and strange history. Once home to up to 265 soldiers, these huge metal boxes on stilts later became the base for a broadcasting revolution. In the 1960s, pirate stations such as Radio City, Invicta and the short-lived Radio Sutch (run by the musician and parliamentary candidate Screaming Lord Sutch), broadcast from the sea forts to huge audiences who wanted to hear the latest pop and rock records.
Tom Edwards and Bob Leroi are two of the DJs with fond memories of their time aboard the sea forts at Shivering Sands, but there is also a darker history. David Featherbe’s father was lost at sea after visiting the Red Sands fort and foul play was suspected. These mysteries and the forts imposing physical architecture fascinate historian Flo McEwan and many artists such as Stephen Turner and Sue Carfrae.
Today the forts lie empty and are slowly being lost to the sea, but they remain a source of inspiration to artists and photographers, as Martha discovers.

580 CHAH Edmonton to carry football commentary in Punjabi.
CHAH 580 Radio Sursangam is a relatively new Punjabi station that began testing on 24th July 2020.
Steve Whitt reports that Edmonton Elks have signed a game commentary contract with the
station. Elks play in the Canadian Football League (this is American, not Association, football) club
and the news is on CFL’s Elks website. If one were lucky enough to hear sport commentary in
Punjabi on 580kHz then the Edmonton station would be a good candidate!
