Some pretty good, extended time on and off with 1413 “Vesti FM” Moldova.
Had my first sighting of 1062 Turkey and it wasnt too bad.
Had Romania on 1053 and 1179. 1053 was ok in short spurts but you can clearly hear the 3rd harmonic of my local 1kw beacon underneath.
Had Iran on 1026 and Lithuania on 1386.

Correction: Yesterday’s blog post about AM – together with FM – radio to stay on air until 2030 has turned out to be far from correct.

Paul has kindly informed me that the actual Department for Culture, Media and Sport report states that only FM is to be retained until 2030. It recommends that the UK’s three national medium wave networks be closed in the mid 2020s, though the final decision is to be left to the individual broadcasters.
Summary: No FM switch off in the UK until at least 2030 says DCMS – RadioToday

AM and FM radio to stay on air until 2030.
The way forward for FM radio is to be secured for the remainder of the last decade after a authorities review advisable that analogue companies are protected until no less than 2030.
Broadcasters will likely be required to preserve AM and FM companies on the airwaves underneath the proposals, that are aimed toward making certain aged radio listeners and these in distant areas should not compelled to swap to digital-only radios.
The UK had been due to start winding down analogue radio licences from 2022, however final year Ofcom gave permission for broadcasters to proceed working for up to ten years. The Government is now anticipated to formally push again the digital switchover following the examine by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
Officials are in search of to stop radio broadcasting from going extinct in Britain as listeners swap to digital streaming companies and sensible audio system.
Julia Lopez, the media minister, mentioned: “We will not have a digital switchover until at least 2030 and will consider new rules to keep our thriving radio sector at the heart of the UK’s media landscape.”
While trendy radios have more and more switched to digital audio companies, the report mentioned FM radio must be protected until no less than 2030. It added that simply 3pc of listening is now achieved over AM radio, making a future switch-off more and more possible.
The report added the brand new radios will likely be required to embrace digital settings by 2023.
It additionally discovered that sensible audio system have been more and more getting used to devour radio and referred to as for brand new authorized protections to drive sensible speaker makers to carry broadcasts from stations such because the BBC.
More than 50pc of UK households personal a sensible speaker despite the fact that they solely arrived within the UK 5 years in the past, in accordance to information from the trade regulator Ofcom.
Almost two-thirds of the audio that Britons devour by way of their sensible audio system is stay radio, the review discovered. Smart audio system now outsell digital radios by 5 to one.

The Orionids radiate from a point near the upraised Club of the constellation Orion the Hunter. The bright star near the radiant point is ruddy, somber Betelgeuse. You might catch an Orionid meteor any time between about October 2 to November 7. In 2021, the peak morning is October 21, but, around then, the full or nearly full Hunter’s Moon will be shining brightly.
https://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/everything-you-need-to-know-orionid-meteor-shower/

When a meteor enters the earth’s atmosphere, friction between the particle and the increasingly dense air causes meteor particle to boil off. The particle collides with the air molecules forming trails of positive ions and free electrons used to reflect the radio waves. The reflecting process is primarily due to the effect of the electrons, since the positive ions are too massive to vibrate under the influence of an electric field.

The electron density of the ionized trail is commonly assumed to be Gaussian in the radial direction and the ionization may or may not be uniform in the axial direction. The length of the ionization region of a trial is approximately 20-40 Km from start to finish. It was found that useful ionized trails occur in an altitude of about 80 to 120 Km above the earth’s surface.

Trails with useful electron densities for reflecting radio signals were found to be plentiful enough to provide communication in the lower portion of (VHF) bond ranging from 30 to 100 MHz over a range of roughly 2000 Km. The minimum range limitation was found to be 400 Km. Ionized trails were found to have a lifetime of only a few tenths of a second, creating the need for rapid exchange of communication. The transmission rate had to be very fast (a burst of data) to take advantage of ionized trail. Hence the term “meteor burst” was coined.

Romania

At the moment (October 19, 2021, 16:55 CEST / 14:55 UTC) there’s no modulation on Antena Satelor at 153 kHz LW, only an empty carrier. See on the Kiwi’s from Szekesfehervar (http://fsdr.duckdns.org/ ) or Bucarest (http://sdr.yo3ksr.ro:8073/ ).
Antena Satelor is on air on 1314 or 630 kHz (last QRG on Bucarest Rx.). No idea if this is a playout fault or a tx defect in Brasov..

Just now on 16:59 MESZ / 14.59 Antena Satelor is back on 153 kHz. I detected this at about 16:30 CEST and until 16:59 there was no modulation. Now it’s back, don’t know why this QRG was muted.
