REMINDER: DX Test TONIGHT! @ 0001 CST / 0601 UTC for 1380 – KQKD in Redfield, SD
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan 14, 2022
The Courtesy Program Committee (CPC) of the National Radio Club (NRC) and the International Radio Club of America (IRCA) is pleased to announce a special DX Test for distant listeners for KQKD on 1380 kHz in Redfield, SD. The test is scheduled for 1/15/2022 at 00:01 AM Central Time (0601 UTC 15 January). This test is scheduled to run for 3 Hours.
For KQKD, Ron Schacht, Owner/Chief Engineer, will be performing regular maintenance of the station’s audio chain during the test. Listeners will hear: Morse Code IDs, Tone Sweeps, Voice IDs, Music, 1 kHz long tones, IRCA Signature Tune “Hands Across The Sea” and more.
RECEPTION REPORTS & QSL REQUESTS
All reception reports will be verified through the CPC with an electronic QSL. Reception reports along with MP3 recordings or .MP4 video recordings of your reception should be emailed to: les@highnoonfilm.com. Please be sure to use the subject line: “KQKD 1380 RECEPTION REPORT.”
The following requirements are in effect in order to receive an electronic QSL verifying your report:
Reports via email only. Email must include an MP3 file attachment of your reception (best two minutes or so in length) or an MP4 video clip. While written descriptions will be considered along with the recording, they will not suffice alone for verification.
Reports must be submitted within 30 days of the test.
The report must include your name, location, and return email address, clearly grouped together at the top of the verification request.
Please also include a description of your receiver, antenna, and any interference noted. If you use a remote SDR to receive the test, you must clearly indicate that in your verification request. We will only accept one such report per DX’er. You cannot log the test on multiple remote SDRs and request multiple verifications.
The IRCA/NRC CPC would like to thank the owners of KQKD, Ron Schacht, Owner/Chief Engineer, and CPC member Paul Walker for helping to arrange the test.
Good luck to all DXers!
About the CPC
The Courtesy Program Committee (CPC) is a cross-functional group comprised of members of both the National Radio Club (NRC) and International Radio Club of America (IRCA) for the purpose of coordinating and arranging DX Tests with AM radio stations. These DX tests both allow radio stations to conduct valuable equipment tests on their transmitter and audio chain as well as enable DX hobbyists to receive the testing station from greater distances than would normally be possible. The CPC membership consists of: Chairman Les Rayburn, Paul Walker, George Santulli, Joe Miller and Loyd Van Horn.
For radio stations interested in coordinating a DX test with the CPC, please visit the following Web site for more information:

Nineteen radio station licenses — located in Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii — will expire on Feb. 1 unless the Federal Communications Commission hears from them.
The FCC has listed stations that were required to fill applications for license renewal by Oct. 1 of 2021 in those states. These 19 stations did not; the list includes full-power stations, low-power FMs and translators.
Each license will expire if no renewal application is received by Feb. 1.
More here.
[Among the listed are a few AM stations, such as KLYC 1260 OR, KEZX 730 OR and KYNR 1490 WA

I stumbled upon a closure which has taken place very quietly.
Thank to Asiawaves for doing the investigation. I looked at their Inactive stations on 603kHz. I was surprised to see that Nicosia CYBC 3 was listed.
Without any obvious publicity the station seems to have closed in May 2021. This escaped the notice of WRTH and still shows as Active in the 2022 edition.
My search on the Nicosia kiwiSDR revealed no noticeable activity on 603kHz. On the other hand a solid signal still exists on 963kHz.

1000 KOMO Seattle WA still announce as “KOMO 24 7”; heard this morning online and via Duvall SDR in WA.
The station was very quick to reply to a reception report from Danish DXer Bjarke Vestesen.
A QSL arrived within one hour. The station was heard several times during the DX-Camp in Tversted, Northern Jutland DNK from January 2nd to 8th.

Between solar wind streams and Solar Cycle 25.
Earth is in a void between solar wind streams. Quiet conditions are expected to prevail until the next stream arrives on Jan. 16th. This forecast could be upended by a solar flare. The sun is dotted with 3 numbered sunspot groups (and a 4th unnumbered region now emerging); unexpected explosions could occur at any time.
Solar Cycle 25 is heating up. New sunspot counts from NOAA confirm that the young solar cycle is outperforming the official forecast. You are here: Sunspot counts have exceeded predictions for 15 straight months. The monthly value at the end of December 2021 was more than twice the forecast, and the highest in more than 5 years. The “official forecast” comes from the Solar Cycle Prediction Panel representing NOAA, NASA and International Space Environmental Services (ISES). Using a variety of leading indicators, the Panel predicted that Solar Cycle 25 would peak in July 2025 as a relatively weak cycle, similar in magnitude to its predecessor Solar Cycle 24. Instead, Solar Cycle 25 is shaping up to be stronger.
