Ukraine

Surprisingly good signal on 1278 kHz at 17:30 CET in  Germany! I wonder where this does originate from!? This tx. seems to be either high powered or must be very close to the border (Lviv?Ushgorod?) in the west.
Good choice of frequency, this is totally free (except Iran deep at night). 657 is the same, but much weaker.

Russia

Tonight I received this message from a fellow Russian DXer, who has something to tell us.

“I want to tell you something, it is not about the radio, but I feel that I need to tell everybody about this. I want to apologize to the Ukrainians and all the rest people of the world for the Russian aggression against Ukraine. It’s a big shame to us that Russia is associated with aggression. A lot of people in Russia are against the war, there are a lot of anti-war rallies in all the biggest cities of Russia, but all of them are dispersed by the police. Only those support the war, who are exposed to propaganda. All independent mass media and Internet resources are closed, and only MW stations from outboard still bring to Russian people actual information about the situation.”

Ukraine Radio is back on 1278 kHz, weak signal during the daylight hours but matching with the radioplayer.ua stream (United News Broadcasting) and a shortwave transmitter is also activated on 6140 kHz. Not clear if that is a pirate broadcasting or an old Shortwave transmitter reactivated like the MW ones.

Strong signal at 1400 UTC via WebSDR in eastern Finland.
QTH still Kurisove abt. 50 kms north of Odessa?

Ydun Ritz (2022-03-08)

100kw from Kurisove (former Petrivka) NE of Odesa.
Standard all-Ukrainian TV-R feed. One can // check with any TV channel.
PS since Radio Mayak Odesa 765 closed I thought this site is dead. Not true, fortunately.

Armiya FM is now much more stable on 809.4 than it was days ago, plus the modulation is a little better, the signal can be heard quietly in Salzburg in the early evening.

This morning 657 was on air. 549 wasn’t on air; 837 and 873 weren’t checked by me.
In this article from Radio Eins “Radio-News” (Kai Ludwig 28/2-2022) is mentioned that some years ago maybe the transmitters were salvaged, although all antennas are still there.
https://www.radioeins.de/programm/sendungen/medienmagazin/radio_news/beitraege/2022/ukraine_mittelwelle.html
Google translated from German:
“The existing medium wave transmitters are also used in the ongoing war. A reception observation is particularly noteworthy, which points to a direct confrontation in this area as well.
This applies to the 810 kHz frequency, on which the Ukrainian military broadcaster Armija FM is temporarily active. This medium wave is more of an appendage to the VHF network and is even not mentioned in the Armija FM frequency list.
Now there is a report that the Russian Westi FM was heard on this frequency. Anything else is inevitably speculation. However, one possibility can be cited that would not even require technical changes.
The medium wave station in Volgograd, which has been idle since the beginning of 2015, is thought to have been conserved. In addition to the main frequency of 567 kHz, there is also a second powerful transmitter for the frequency of 810 kHz. It belonged to Radio Majak’s AM network, which was shut down in 2012.
In the meantime, attempts are being made in the Ukraine to restart those medium-wave transmitters that have only been idle for a few years due to the chronic underfunding of broadcasting.
The 549 kHz frequency, which was switched on again immediately on February 24, was followed the next day by the 837 kHz transmitter. However, a reception observation speaks of the almost immediate termination of the signal at 3:37 p.m. CET.
On February 26 and 27, two more transmitters, at best 25 kW, went back into operation on 657 kHz and 1404 kHz.
In Kyiv, on the other hand, there is nothing left to reactivate. The extensive transmission systems for long wave (207 kHz, shut down in 2010), medium wave and short wave (shut down here in 2002) were demolished between 2005 and 2013.
One should not bet too early on the transmitters in the Lviv area, about which there is speculation precisely because of the former single-wave operation of medium wave 549 kHz: Years ago, there was lively mention of the use of the hacksaw in the transmitter room.”

Checking at 20:30 UTC, and 549 is no longer carrying the super power Ukrainian Radio.  I can still hear them on 873 at fair/good level with President Zelensky speaking at 20:49, cochannel to a Quran station.   I hear no other Ukrainian transmitters on MW (via Hungarian SDR).

Here in Finland I can hear UR also on 657 (strong, but QRM) and 1404 kHz (weak) with QRM and Armiya FM 809.4v kHz.

657 kHz is right now (17:25 CET = 18:25 in Kiew) coming in with S=3 signal. fading, but clearly audible with many “beep tones” (censury of words).
549 kHz is NOT there right now – don`t know the reason for that, yesterday at the same time it WAS there. [Heard Sunday morning via remote SDR in Finland/Ed].

657 is listed with much weaker power but now during the dawn of the day, it is present thanks to the close distance (below 1200 km).
While 549 tx is about 1600 km away from here; 549 site is located not far away from Kherson, let us hope for the best that this tx. will be back on air shortly….
