Afghanistan

Translated from French:
According to Afghanistan International, the Taliban are considering transforming state TV channels into radio stations following the ban on broadcasting images of living beings. Will they use myrrh to embalm the death of TV? Sources have indicated that staff from the national TV network in Kabul and various provinces will probably be reassigned to work in the new radio stations, aimed at promoting the group’s policies and spreading its religious views.
Radio Bayan-e Shomal will be renamed Radio Hurriyat, and its broadcasts will be managed by the Taliban’s intelligence services. Radio stations will also be dedicated to the Ministry of the Interior and the army.
The Taliban also intend to shut down Afghan national television and replace it with “Radio Shariat”, which was a key media outlet during the first Taliban regime under Mullah Omar.
Yusuf Ahmadi , director of Taliban-controlled national television, told a meeting of media officials that the decision to stop TV broadcasts had been taken by the Taliban leadership. The Taliban have already interrupted national TV broadcasts in Kandahar and Takhar.
This decision follows a recent statement by the Taliban’s Ministry of Virtue Promotion, which indicated that the group was gradually implementing a law banning the dissemination of images of living beings.

1510, WLGN, OH, Logan has switched to country. IDs as “The Wolf.”

1390, WMPO, OH, Middleport/Pomeroy continues silent, as do its associated FM repeaters. It is worth noting that its co-owned FM, WYBK- Middleport/Pomeroy (92.1) has also switched from rock to country. IDs as “Hank-FM.” Makes me wonder what WMPO will be running when they come back. My preference would be a good oldies station, wince WVAM, Parkersburg doesn’t get in here well at all.

(NRK) Longyearbyen-1485 was definitely upgraded a few years ago, and I very much suspect a new transmitter as well, as the old one had poor modulation and a different offset than the present signal. It has massively more gain now than before and totally ruins my DX on 1480 and 1490 on beverages pointing that direction. I am 900+ km to the south of Longyearbyen. It is skywave here, I can’t hear it during summer for instance. As far as I know though, it’s still 1 kW.

Yes, the Telenor eEngineer I spoke with said, that antenna and grounding were improved in 2020, but there hasn’t been green light so far for raising the tx power and it is still 1 kW.

From NRK:
“We are only allowed to broadcast to the Spitsbergen Island (Svalbard) and the surrounding ocean areas with this transmitter. The national regulator has set a limit of 1kW.”

730 BC Vancouver CKGO.
Still no word on the fate of this station. It continues to simulcast CKNW-980 New Westminster BC most of the time, though CKGO interrupts the simulcasting on a daily basis to provide a podcast of Alan Cross’ Ongoing History of New Music, just as CHQT-880 Edmonton did just before the announcement that CHED-630 would take over 880. At CKGO, the automation has gotten sloppy with Alan’s podcast starting a minute or two into a syndicated show on CKNW or even in the middle of a commercial, then returning, mid-word, into the same syndicated show or another commercial.

WATH, 970, Athens, Ohio noted today carrying Infinity Sports Network. All indications are this is a format change. They had been AdCom and doing a lot of local origination. But in November they switched to “Ho Ho Radio” (Christmas mx) & no sign of the regular local staff.
WMPO, 1390, Middleport-Pomeroy, OH, has gone silent, both their AM & the FM repeater in Athens. Their OCs are on. We may get a format change here too as they have been FSR.
Total Media has been expanding rapidly, adding to their original 3 FMs & 1 AM in Vinton & Jackson counties, buying WATH/WXTQ-FM Athens two years ago, adding WMPO/WYVK-FM, Middleport, WTHQ, 1030, Point Pleasant, WV, and the Waverly AM & FM stations in the last year. They have been advertising for a sales person & local advertising on WATH have been disappearing. I wonder if they didn’t bite off more than they couldchew. They paid 1.06 million for WATH/WXTQ.

BBC Radio 4‘s longwave transmitter at Droitwich is due to shut down in June 2025. If the latest announced extension is to be believed. This extension has been negotiated by the energy industry, which relies on the BBC to transmit the Economy 7 telecoms signal.
It appears that almost a million homes and businesses still rely on old meters that use the telecommutation signal. It is therefore unlikely that all these meters will be replaced before June.
Are we heading for another extension? The longwave transmitter is owned and operated by Arqiva on behalf of the BBC. Arqiva may be happy to keep the customer for a few more months, but is concerned about the state of the installation, which is at the end of its life, and above all about the stock of spare parts, which is almost non-existent, following the various postponements.
Another concern for Arqiva: The Twentieth Century Society (C20), which aims to save irreplaceable twentieth-century buildings and design, is campaigning to save the two masts and the main transmission building of the Droitwich transmitting station. C20 wants to list the site as part of England’s national heritage.
These two 213.4 m (700 ft.) steel lattice masts are supported by 21 steel cables, each anchored to a concrete block weighing 400 tonnes. They were the tallest structures in the UK when they were built, and are believed to be the only pre-war structures over 200 m to have survived, making them the oldest telecommunication structures of their type in Britain.
The station’s main transmission building, built in 1934, was also included in the consultation. Comprising four contiguous blocks, clad in limestone and finished with decorative tooling, they are monolithic Art Deco in style.
Unfortunately, the complex has been profoundly altered in the course of its existence. A new western facade was added in the 1990s, reusing the carved BBC coat of arms that had been salvaged from the old facade.
This applies to all three transmitters: Droitwich, Burghead and Westerglen.

As you may have noticed in MWN DX Logs I had a rare catch of WENC on 1220kHz on 11th December.
I emailed a reception report to the station and heard nothing back until Monday this week when I had an email from acting station manager Tahitian McKenzie which said:

“Thank you for your email. This is wonderful. However, due to the deaths of the station’s owners, the radio station ceased operations as of 12/31/24.”

Sadly my log may be a one-time catch.
I did a bit of digging further and found this post from 17 hours ago.

KROS Radio [1340 kHz / Ed] in Clinton, Iowa has its signal picked up in the Arctic Circle.
A very nice feature here on WQAD Channel 8 in Moline, Illinois.  And kudos to Paul Dimkowski at KROS-1340 in Clinton for being so knowledgeable about the DXing hobby.
