Salem Media will move its Conservative Talk “The Answer” programming from 860 KPAM Troutdale/Portland OR to 1640 KDZR Lake Oswego on April 1.
The two signals will simulcast from April 1 through April 17, with 1640 becoming the format’s new exclusive home starting on April 18. The move shifts the station from the 50kW day/15kW night 860 signal to the 10kW day/1kW night expanded band 1640 replacing Regional Mexican “La Patrona 1640“.
Salem has not shared its plans for the 860 facility yet. It shares its facility with Intelli’s currently silent 1550 KKOV Vancouver WA. In addition to KPAM and KDZR, Salem owns Regional Mexican “El Rey 93.1” KRYP Gladstone, Christian Preaching 93.9 KPDQ-FM Portland, and Preaching “True Talk 800” KPDQ/106.3 K292HH Portland in the market.

Limited Time DX Opportunity: KBOZ-1090 Bozeman MT has long been licensed for 5 kW at night with a slightly misshapen skinny WSW-NE Figure 8 directional pattern that takes five towers to create and sends almost no power in other directions. But they are currently operating 1250 watts non-directional at night and get out quite well. They are almost always there here in Edmonton despite KPTR-1090 Seattle WA pushing the non-directional equivalent of 100 kW in my direction. KBOZ’s STA was just renewed so they will be running 1250 watts for a while longer. Their CP is for only 32 watts non-directional at night, so this 1250 watts STA won’t last forever. KBOZ’s original night pattern had to protect CHEC-1090 Lethbridge AB, which has since changed call letters and moved to FM.

1230 NU Iqaluit CFFB
Before CFFB can go off the air, CFFB-FM-3 Iqaluit must increase power (ERP) from 179 watts to 640 watts, to serve, in its primary contour, at least as many listeners as are served in CFFB’s 1 kW primary contour. Oddly enough, the CBC plans to lower “the effective height of the antenna above average terrain (EHAAT) from -37.4 metres to -41.9 metres”. CFFB-FM-3 will remain on 91.1 MHz.

As mentioned last week, Sports 1440 has applied to run their North-facing directional pattern full-time instead of just at night, which will significantly improve their signal into their target market, Edmonton. The Application is currently Open for Comments, with a Comment deadline of March 20th.

1470 BC Vancouver CJVB
Transmitter was turned off at 0245 March 5th, the day that the license expired, after running Open Carrier for a few hours. An audio loop was first heard March 2nd, in English and Chinese, announcing that CJVB-1470 was going off the air, mentioning that some programming was moving to co-owned CHKG-FM. CJVB had the honor of being on the NRC’s Unheard List for a quarter century, thanks to their very tight Null to the South, to protect nearby KAPS Mt. Vernon WA when they were on 1470. 15 years before CJVB first signed on, KAPS first applied for a license as a 1KW non-directional Daytimer. A year later, after discovering that 1470 was reserved for a Vancouver BC station on 1470, KAPS changed their Application to 500 watts directional, still daytime-only, with a null so deep to the North that, once they were on the air, you could still see the towers while driving North but could not hear their signal.

Tips from CFAX-1070 Victoria BC, Gilles Michaud, Theo Donnelly and belated thanks to Andrew Brade for some last minute changes to last week’s column.

Since today, at least, seven medium wave stations of COPE had appeared with a loop playing all the time, inviting the listeners to tune into FM, saying in each province what’s the frequency in FM, or to tune via web.
Not saying a closure, but compulsory forcing the people to tune FM, or web or radio sound via digital UHF TV.
It is said these outlets are redundant in places where COPE has two FM stations to do COPE and COPE + (plus, or más) to give sport matches or talk radio in each channel.
But in cities without duplicated signal, it will remain the AM station… for the moment.

BBC Channel Island stations to end medium wave transmissions.
Less than 100 stations across Europe still broadcast services on AM.
The latest wave of BBC local radio medium wave transmitter closures will take place at the end of this month.
The shut down will affect BBC Radio Guernsey and BBC Radio Jersey, though both stations will continue to be available on FM, DAB and via BBC Sounds.
The BBC says the latest shut downs follow declining audience numbers on Medium Wave, with listeners preferring the audio quality of other services.
Manx Radio continues to offer medium wave transmissions, though the station has been running a DAB pilot over the past three years.
AM or medium wave services have been in steady decline across Europe for nearly two decades, with the UK and countries in Eastern Europe among relatively few to still provide medium wave options.
It’s thought less than 100 stations across the Continent still broadcast services on AM.
The wavelength has been used since the 1950s and medium wave audiences are generally among older age groups.
But it seems the frequency that’s crackled, popped and faded across the airwaves since the arrival of rock and pop may soon die on the altar of digital clarity.

Iran /Jamming

After the “bubble jammer” switched off, today I observed TWO regionals on 1548 kHz against VOA Farsi. I heard the joint regional program with slight echo, so at least two regional stations are working on it, (R. Kahavaran listed). Radio Iran was present too on 1548 under the mess, I identified it using headphones. So there is a new method for jamming in Iran – moving regional stations to the desired frequency. Radio Ilam did the same, it moved to 1395 kHz from 1044 kHz and caused interference on stations broadcasting from Armenia on this frequency.
