Ethiopia

A station on 630 kHz heard on the KiwiSDR in Addis Ababa may be associated with the Oromia Education Bureau and broadcasts pre-recorded lessons for students in Oromo and Amharic (I have not noticed what might be considered as live programmes). A lot of typical Horn of Africa type music is played, as well as a repetitive xylophone-style tune between some lessons.
I have translated snippets and come up with various introductions, such as “This is a 7th grade Amharic language course prepared by the Oromia Education Bureau”, “This is a 5th grade environmental science lesson”, “This is a 7th grade lesson in the field of physical education”, “This program is designed for those who are learning Amharic as a second language” etc, but no clear indication as to the actual station name. As would be expected for student lessons, it is heard during what would be the daytime n Ethiopia. Judging from the strength of reception, the transmitter appears to be located in Addis Ababa.

CFQR 600 Montreal.
A good friend of mine has just started working as a Weather Specialist at CFQR 600 Montreal.
CFQR is a small private station which broadcasts on 600kHz from a site just south of the city with 10kW daytime and 5kW nighttime.
They are quite enthusiastic about getting reception reports from distant listeners, and on their website under “Contact Us” is a page formatted for SINPO reports.

Medium wave is still used in this country, sometimes under difficult conditions due to the climate and the discontinuation of certain transmitter production facilities.
The country invested in the renovation of its transmitters until 2005.
The following transmitters are currently in service.

For SNRT Al Idaâ Al-Watania
540 Khz at Sidi Bennour 250 kW (32°43’33.7 ‘N 8°17’32.2 ’W)
595 Khz at Oujda 100 kW (34°39’48.4 ‘N 1°54’28.7 ’W)
612 Khz in Sabaâ Aioun 100 kW (33°53’54.8 ‘N 5°23’02.7 ’W)

For SNRT Radio Laâyoun :
711 Khz at Laâyoun – Foum-el-Oued 250 kW (27°10’24.6 ‘N 13°21’50.8 ’W)

SNRT was faced with the disappearance of the Croatian company RIZ, its main AM and FM supplier. Fortunately for the radio station, Zeljko Pinturic, one of RIZ’s union leaders, has set up a company to maintain RIZ transmitters: PINT-TX SERVIS j.d.o.o. in JASTREBARSKO, Croatia.
Although SNRT’s technical teams provide high-quality maintenance, when the going gets tough, like many broadcasters around the world, they ask Zeljko to step in.
He did so recently at the Laâyoun site in the Moroccan Sahara.
This transmitter centre, located close to the ocean, suffers not only from the marine climate but also from sandstorms, which can even completely sand up the feeders and the antenna insulator, as happened to the old transmitter.
The transmitter broadcasts the Radio Laâyoune Amazighe programme to counter the propaganda of Radio Nationale de la République Arabe Sahraouie Démocratique (Polisario Front), which broadcasts from Tindouf in Algeria. It is the only medium-wave transmitter that broadcasts this programme. The other transmitter that was supposed to broadcast the programme is located in Aït Melloul, 15 km south of Agadir. Unfortunately, it is silent for technical reasons. The centre was refurbished in 2005, with Thomson Broadcast (Arelis group) winning the tender. This included comprehensive services: from installation to commissioning of two redundant 400 KW units, as well as civil engineering and refurbishment of the antenna line and the antenna cabin. To ensure optimum maintenance, Thomson Broadcast engineers had to train the SNRT’s technical teams on site.
The transmitters have never worked satisfactorily. They are now at a standstill and are the subject of a dispute between the SNRT and Thomson’s ‘heirs’. This dispute is reportedly the subject of legal proceedings.
The SNRT has issued invitations to tender for the purchase of spare parts, but no action has been taken.
The Azilal 207 kHz long-wave transmitter seems to have been definitively withdrawn from service, but the SNRT has just inherited the Medi 1 company, which still operates the 171 kHz long-wave transmitter at Sélouane, near Nador. A prime location, on the Algerian border, along the Mediterranean. Although broadcasting at reduced power, it is equipped with 4 S7HP 400 kW units manufactured by Thomson.

As anticipated by some of our readers in this Blog, yesterday, Friday 7 March, RADIO CADENA UNO AM 1240 KHz was back on the air, after being inactive for several months. During the last few years this station has been characterised by the irregularity of its transmissions, appearing and disappearing from the dial quite frequently, although it has always been possible to listen to it via streaming. CADENA UNO started its activity on 26 November 2013 and is a station that is registered in the Media Census implemented through Resolution 001-AFSCA/09.
It appears to maintain the location of its studios, on 137 Carlos Pellegrini Street, 7th Floor, in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires; E-mail: cadenaunoam1240@gmail.com, and Web Page: www.cadenauno1240.com.ar. It is operated by the firm ‘Radiodifusora Cadena Uno S.R.L.’, under the general management of Mr. Juan Ricardo Mussa; and its transmitting plant is located at 4697 Comesaña Street -height of the Acceso Oeste Highway -Colectora Lado Sur- Nº 4650-, in the locality of Ciudadela, District of Tres de Febrero, Province of Buenos Aires (CG: 34°37’49.5 ‘S, 58°33’24.0 ’W). It is estimated that the station will continue with all the programming it offered on its website, including music and sports programmes.

Radio Impacto (1440 KHz), which transmits from the town of Ciudad Madero, Buenos Aires Province has seized transmission. This station had started broadcasting in August 1989.
LRI213 Radio el Sol (1450 KHz), with studies in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and Transmitter Plant in Don Bosco has been irregular the last months and has now totally stopped transmission.
LT15 Radio del Litoral (560 KHz), which emits from Concordia, Province of Entre Rios, is also off the air due to having suffered the impact of a lightning during last Friday 28th February, which caused serious damage to the station’s equipment, including the two main consoles (both AM and FM), the telephone receiver, internal network suites and hybrids. In addition to this unfortunate event, the radio was going through a difficult financial situation.

Radio Folklorisimo (1410 KHz) is finally reactivated, after a few weeks of being off-air on AM.

Townsquare Media, which has been pruning underperforming stations from its portfolio for divestment or license cancellation for the past several years, has ceased operations on two more.
Sports “ESPN Quad Cities” 1170 KBOB/104.1 K281DB Davenport IA and Red Dirt Country 1280 KSLI Abilene TX both ceased operations in late February. KBOB had been operating via STA with its nighttime pattern for the past three years due to a faulty switcher. The station is licensed with 1kW both daytime and night, but with different directional patterns.
KSLI has been simulcasting 92.5 KMWX Abilene since January 2023 when the AM’s Red Dirt Country format was moved to the FM and rebranded from “Lonestar 1280” to “92.5 The Ranch“. KSLI is licensed to operate with 500 watts day and 226 watts night non-directional.
In both STA requests, Townsquare Media SVP/Engineering Martin Stabbert said, “Due to economic conditions in the market, the licensee was forced to take the station off the air temporarily. The licensee respectfully requests special temporary authority for the station to remain silent. The licensee will promptly notify the Commission when it is able to resume station operations.”
