A new rock-based radio station, ZoomRock FM , has started broadcasting in Turku at the beginning of February . The station operates on the medium wave band at a frequency of 1242 kHz. This is the wave band where, among others, Radio Luxembourg once broadcast and was also widely listened to in Finland on mobile radios in the 1970s-90s.
Behind the new station is local radio veteran Harri Kujala , who once worked at radio station Auran Aalto for 28 years.
ZoomRock’s broadcast is particularly well heard in cars within a range of about 10–25 kilometers in Turku and the surrounding area. During darkness, the signal is reflected from the ionosphere hundreds of kilometers away, even outside Finland. The broadcast is mono and the audio band is narrower than in FM broadcasts.
The medium wave band is being phased out in European broadcasting, but it is still found in most car radios, as well as almost all portable radios and home stereos. On receivers it is usually marked MW or AM.
The reason for operating on medium waves is the moderate copyright fees for music, which enable hobby-based radio operations in this area. ZoomRock will broadcast the program until the end of April with a temporary three-month license. The Radio Act stipulates that after that, there must be a one-month break before a new three-month period.
During the spring test broadcast, the station will broadcast non-stop rock music, and those interested can also receive free advertising on a trial basis during this time.
ZoomRock is aimed at men over 50 who like guitar-based, light and melodic rock music. The music is based on seven decades of rock classics. Blues and prog are on the playlist, but heavy metal is not heard on the airwaves.

It was expected to play music for a while before returning to its former identity as Radio Belgrano in “mid-January”.

Listening today on LU4EEC’s KiwiSDR, the station is playing a mix of music – from excellent retro ska “Calaveras y Diablitos” by Argentine band “Los Fabulosos Cadillacs” to “I don’t like Mondays” by the Boomtown Rats (NB no use of Shazam or any artyfishul intellygence, just Mk.1 human ears). The station identifies (not too frequently) as “streAM 950”. In fact I heard the same ID mentioned above that followed the full-time whistle.

ZoomRock FM, despite the name, is a brand new mediumwave station now testing on 1242 kHz from Turku. Test transmissions are running at 500 to 1000 watts, and the signal already carries that unmistakable AM feel many of us have missed.
The station is set to officially launch on 1 February and plans to broadcast around the clock. ZoomRock is a private station led by well known Finnish radio professional Harri Kujala.
Testing began on 4 January. Harri knows radio and care deeply about how it sounds. This is the kind of station that reminds you why mediumwave still has a place on the dial.
The Finnish radio scene is quietly becoming more interesting again. We already have several special shortwave hobby stations appearing regularly on the bands, and ZoomRock will be Finland’s first station fully dedicated to mediumwave.
With ZoomRock, mediumwave in Finland is no longer silent, and that alone is worth celebrating.

We have good news. We have restored broadcasting on medium wave, 1584 kHz.
This is the first band on which Chistaya Volna FM began broadcasting seven years ago.
Radio amateurs listen to us on these frequencies in the evenings. The range of radio waves depends on weather and atmospheric conditions. We were pleased to receive messages from radio amateurs hundreds and thousands of kilometers from our transmitting center. These include the Krasnodar Krai, Rostov Oblast, Ossetia, Crimea, Stavropol, Finland, and, to our surprise, China. Although the quality in the latter countries leaves much to be desired, the mere fact of receiving even a few minutes of a distant station is already a success for a radio amateur.
